(1) A Perthshire surname, may be from Yuel, a form of Joel. William filius Yuel was witness in a Perth charter, n.d., but in reign of Alexander II (Scon, p. 58). (2) The Shetland surname of Yell is derived from the name of the principal island of the Shetland group. Old lell in Easter Skeld, parish of Sandsting, is in record, 1615 (Shetland). Persons of this name in Shetland have changed to Dalziel, probably from the idea of its being more aristocratic, and spell Deyell or De Yell.
