A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

Of local origin probably from the "Sichetum qui vocatur ylalwleche extendens ad medium marisii de Balnedrum' mentioned in a thirteenth-century charter (RD., p. 223). Balnedrum is now Bandrum in the parish of Saline. Gillelmus Yhalulok was a student in St. Andrews, 1413 (ERUS., p. 1), David Yhaliluk and Thomas Yhaliluk appear as witnesses in 1445 (Cambus., 214), and in 1459 'Sir' Duncan lhaluloh exchanged the rectory of the church of Ranpatrick for the benefice of Crawfurd-Lindsay (LSC., p. 148). In 1467 he appears again as Duncan Yalulok, vicar of Crawford-Lindsay (Soltre, p. cxix), and as Duncan Yhalulok, presbyter of St. Andrews diocese in 1470 (Wemyss, II, p. 98). Bardsley gives Yellowley as a northern English surname of local origin, but "cannot find the spot."
