YENSTAY: An old Orcadian family deriving their surname from the lands of Yenstay in the parish of St. Andrews, Orkney. Jhone of Yensta was juror on an assize in Orkney in 1509 (OSR., I, p. 252), and Andro Zinsta was juror on assize, Kirkwall, 1573 (ibid., p. 267). Olay lensta and John Elder of Zensta were roithmen in Kirkwall in 1516 (SCM., V, p. 395; PSAS., LIII, p. 192). A genealogy of the family from 1509 is given by Clouston (REO., p. 470). Yainistane 1572, Yinsta 1573, Yinstall 1591.
