A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

The usual explanation of this name as "one given to children born on Christmas day," does not satisfy me, but I am at present unable to offer a satisfactory interpretation in place of it. "It is pretended that the Yuilles are descended of a son of Drumikills, born upon Yuilday. This pretension is adhered to by some of the name of Yuille, by others not" (Buchanan, p. 296). Johannes Yhole was burgess of Haddington in 1374 (Yester, p. 26). Johannes Yhole was chaplain in Aberdeen in 1391 (REA., I, p. 189), and Simon Youle executed a charter of sale in the same city in 1399 (Friars, p. 21). John Yhule one of the 'appretiatores camium' in Aberdeen in 1398 (CRA., p. 375) appears in 1400 and 1401 as bailie and burgess of the same city (SCM., V, p. 15; Friars, p. 22). John Yule de Garmiltoun witnessed the perambulation of the marches of Gladsmuir in 1430 (James II, 16), Thomas Yhule was admitted burgess of Aberdeen in 1451 (NSCM., I, p. 12), and a quantity of timber was purchased from Jonete Gule in 1494 (ALHT., I, p. 252). Sir Robert Yuile and Willie Yuile were tacksmen in Walls, Orkney, in 1503 (REO., p. 413), John Youle was officer in Stirling in 1525 (SBR., p. 22), Robert Ywle witness in Glasgow in 1551 (Protocols, I), Thomas Zule was maltman there in 1577 (Burgesses), Inza Yowyll held land in Holland in Firth, Orkney, in 1553 (REO., p. 250), and Mr. James Yuill was minister of Dairsie, Fife, in 1595 (Dysart, p. 42). Alexander Zule or Yule, headmaster of the Grammar School of Stirling (1578-1612) Latinized his name Julius, and Archibald Yuill was town drummer of Rutherglen in the first half of the nineteenth century. Robert Zooll was eldest son of Robert Zuill, merchand citiner of St. Andrews in 1655 (Inquis., 4049), Nicol Zuill was servitor to George Campbell in 1659 (Poltalloch Writs, p. 76), and Robert Yule was an elder in Dysart in 1641 (PBK., p. 209). James Yool, a poet in Paisley, middle of nineteenth century. The form Zuill is not uncommon in Stirlingshire. The Yules were classed among the followers of Clan Buchanan. Sir Henry Yule (1820-1889), military engineer and Orientalist, was the most distinguished bearer of the name. The old Aberdeenshire surname of Idill has been absorbed by Yule. Yoole 1686, Yoile 1516, Youle 1816, Zuille 1711, Zwyll 1550. compare under Yell (1).
