User-submitted Reference

Ontological summaries in the Province of Bizkaia, now in Spain, there are the conjoined communities of Amorebieta and Etxano. There are recorded both Yznaga and Areyznagaineta.

Yznaga nor Iznaga have no meaning in Euskera or the Basque Language according to testimony by linguists at the Center for Basque Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno. Reference to modern English-Basque and Basque-English do not list any such words as the affected "Yznaga" that begins with the letter "Y" nor the standard Latinate spelling with the the letter "i."

Ontological dictionaries do list "Areyznagaineta" in the area of Amorebieta - Etxano to the southeast of Bilbao. Euzkadian surnames identify house or home names similar to that of rural England. The owners or tenants of the farm are known by the house name. In the case of tenants, 100 year leases are common and tradition encourages the tenants to adopt the house name as their identity.

The break down of the name Areyznagaineta or Areiznagaineta is:

  1. Areiz (a gamble oak distinguished from a holly or evergreen oak) and then the adjective modifier immediately after "na" that means "large."
  2. Secondly, the phrase "ga-in" and "eta." Gain is a place of victory in battle or a high pass or a summit. "eta" simply mean location, landmark or place.

Therefore, Areiznagaineta is possibly a battle site victorious marked by a large Gamble Oak, or a large and easily spotted Gamble Oak at a summit or near a mountain pass.
