User-submitted Reference
Zeidler (Middle High German: 'beekeeper') is an occupational last name of Germanic origin with particular recognition in the state of Bayern (Bavaria), where the Zeidler guild was integral in making Nuremberg the epicenter of the European honey trade. The first guilds bearing the 'Zeidlerei' title were formed the year 1296 in Feucht, a sylvan village south of Nuremberg, whose dense, sparsely populated woods mostly lay outside the purview of the courts, largely invisible to the Holy Roman Empire. This much was acknowledged by Emperor Charles IV, whose issue of the "Zeidel Fryheit Brieff" in 1350 granted partial jurisdiction over much of Nuremberg to the Zeidler guilds themselves. The Zeidlerei, nimble forest rangers by trade, were naturally well suited. They were given crossbows by way of an explicit royal decree. A present-day "Zeidler Museum" in Feucht maintains a collection of medieval documents and lore, a royal-issued Zeidler uniform (complete with a giant, beehive-shaped hat), and the story of beekeeping as it evolved and scaled into a major economic presence in central Europe. With the arrival of sugar cane in the 1700s, the beekeeping industry began to lose its high status, however many Zeidler guilds survived into the beginning of the 19th century when the arrival of low-cost beet sugar and electricity effectively made beekeeping obsolete.
