The Zepezauers come from the Salzburg area of the Austrian Alps, centered in the town of Bad Ischl, along with other families (including the Zauners, Urbans, Plakingers and others), many of whom migrated to Eastern Europe at the behest of the Empress Maria Teresa in the 1700s. The name "Zepezauer" comes from the German words, zapfen (pinecones) and au (meadows). People from the Zapfen-Au area were known as Zapfenauers, which the local dialect evolved into Zepezauers.
