Elena la Suchis or la louche was daughter and coheir with her sisters, Margaret and Isabel, of Helen, eldest daughter and coheir of Alan the last of the old lords of Galloway, and wife of Roger de Quincy, earl of Winchester. She married Alan la Zouche of Ashley, county Leicester, who died in 1269. Symon de la Souche del counte de Lanark rendered homage, 1296 (Bain, II, p. 213). The lands of Sir Alan de la Souche in county of Arne were taken into the king's hands for his not doing service, 1304 (ibid., p. 425). The name comes from a place in Huntingdonshire, in Latin record rendered de stipite sicio.

The baronial family, who gave the suffix to Ashby de la Zouch, co. Leicester, were a branch of the Earls of Brittany, though genealogists differ as to the precise period and cadet. The founder of the race in England was William le Zusche, who died in the first year of King John. In a charter he calls Roger la Zusche his father, and Alan, Earl of Brittany, his grandfather. Camden mentions the latinization of this surname as "De Stipite Sicco ("of the dry trunk or log")-for William de la Zouch, Archbishop of York, is so called in this verse, for his valour in an encounter against the Scottishmen at Bear-park, 1342 —
