Zwirn Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

(from an ancestor's occupation) Zwirn is the German word for “thread.” The name was taken by a tailor.

User-submitted Reference

'Zwirn' or other variants of the surname means 'thread' in German. That's correct.

But it looks to me as one variant of a typical German-Jewish name.

Jews were not allowed to become craftsmen, as taylors in Germany (not only in Germany).

A 'Zwirn' was a jew who started his business by going from town to town and village to village

with a hawker's tray. He brought threads, needles and everything a (peasant) housewife needed.

They did not care if he was a jew. They were only interested in his goods. For them he was the 'Zwirn',

not the jew.The population was not necessarily anti-jewish.I know reports that peasants

preferred jewish cattle dealers because they

paid better prizes. I know a report about a christian woman in the 17th century who was executed

as a witch because she had enchanted a jew.

I do not want to excuse what happened to the jewish people in Europe after the Catholics had

brought the Nazis into power in 1933. I'm only talking about the historical context.

This surname comes from a German and Jewish Ashkenazic metonymic occupational name for a yarn, thread or twine maker, from German zwirn meaning 'twine', 'thread', 'yarn'.

- grgur
