Čingelić and its variant, Čanaglić, are Serbian surnames that entered what became Yugoslavia as early as 1661. Its source is from Northern Slovakia, though, it is also found in Hungary under different spellings. In Slovakia it was found as: Zingle, Single, Czingle and Ozingle. Its origin is uncertain, but it may be from the German, zingle, meaning 'belt', probably a name given to a beltmaker; or less likely, it could be derived from Tschingel, a mountain in Switzerland. Caspar Tzingel, a minor noble is mentioned in Frankfurt-am-Main, Germany in 1402.
The Slovakian, Hungarian and Croatian Cingle families were Catholics, but many who went to Serbia became Orthodox Christians. About two thirds of Cingle families took the South Slavic suffix -ić, probably to blend into the Serbian-Orthodox culture. Most who bear the Cingle surname live in Serbia's northern province, Vojvodina.
