Historical Description

Llandegfan, a parish and village in the hundred of Tindaethwy, county of Anglesey, is about 2 ½ miles north from Menai Bridge railway station and 3 east-south-east from Beaumaris, in Beaumaris sub-registration district, union of Bangor, Anglesey first petty-sessional division, county-court district of Llangefni, rural deanery of Tindaethwy, archdeaconry of Anglesey and Bangor, diocese of Bangor, situated on the western shore of the Menai Straits, and intersected by the road from Menai bridge to Beaumaris, which runs parallel with the straits, and in its length, within the parish, of nearly 3 miles, presents a succession of varied and beautifully picturesque scenery. The village is about 2 miles inland. The church of St. Tegfan, originally built in the 14th century, is in the form of a cross in the Gothic style, and consists of chancel, nave, north and south transepts, porch, and a lofty square embattled tower surmounted by pinnacles, and containing a clock and one bell, the date on which is 1666; the south transept has a chapel attached. The church has no memorial or stained windows, but in the chancel south wall is a tablet with the following inscription: “Donation to the poor of Llandegfan, 25th August 1826, bequeathed by the Right Honourable the Lady Viscountess Warren Bulkeley to the Venerable the Archdeacon of Bangor and the Rev. Rector of the parish in trust the sum of £1,000, the interest to be distributed at their discretion for the benefit of the poor, half-yearly.” And on the east wall in the chancel, a plaster tablet with head, pointed beard, ruff and coat of arms. Inscription, “To ye memory of Mr. Thomas Davis Gent, servant to ye Two Most Illustrious Princes Henry & Charles both princes of Wales and now to King Charles ye 1st messenger of, His Mtis chamber, who in his lifetime in Christian charitie confered on this pirshe of Llan Digvan where hee was borne. Ye sum of fiftie shillings for ever to ye releife of ye poore in this parish, that is to say on every Sunday morning after 1 dozen of bread for ever, and for ye continvance here of, He hath given to ye churchwardens foure shillings a yeare for ever.” In the south wall a tablet, “Dr. John Jones late Dean of Bangor left to this parish the sum of 5 pounds to be laid out at interest by the minister & wardens for the maintainance of a Welsh School to instruct the poor boys of this parish 1727.” The registers date from the year 1733. The living is a rectory with Beaumaris, average tithe rent-charge £274, in the gift of Sir Richard Williams-Bulkeley bart. and held since 1866 by the Rev. John Williams-Meyrick of New Inn Hall, Oxford.

The area comprises 2,246 acres, of which 10 are water; the population in 1891 was 1,089.
