Historical Description
Llanfaes, a parish and village on the bay of Beaumaris, in the county of Anglesey, about 1 ½ miles north from Beaumaris and 6 ½ miles north-east of Menai Bridge station, is in the hundred and rural deanery of Tyndaethwy, and archdeaconry and diocese of Bangor. The church of St. Catherine is an ancient and spacious edifice of stone, in the Early Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, and a lofty embattled tower with pinnacles, erected in 1811 by Thomas James, seventh Viscount Bulkeley; the chancel has a good east window; there are 300 sittings. The registers of baptisms and burials date from the year 1727; marriages, 1754. The living is a vicarage, with Penmon annexed, average tithe rent-charge £60; gross income £195, with residence, in the gift of Sir Richard H. Williams-Bulkeley bart., and held since 1889 by the Rev. Thomas Lloyd Kyffiji M. A. of Jesus College, Cambridge.
Castell Lleiniog, a little distance north of the village, is now merely the shell of a small rectangular tower, with circular turrets at the angles, and standing on a now thickly-wooded mound, with remains of a fosse and a hollow way leading to the shore. This fortress was erected in 1098 by Hugh Lupus, Earl of Chester, and during the Civil War was garrisoned for the Parliament, but was captured by the Royalist forces, under Colonel Robinson, in 1645. Here was once a house of Franciscan or Grey Friars, otherwise called Friars Minors, founded between 1230 and 1240 by Llewellyn ap Iorwerth, prince of North Wales, and to which a charter, appointing 8 brethren for the celebration of divine service and other rites, was granted in 1414 by Henry v. The Princess Joan, wife of the founder, natural daughter of King John, who died c. 1237, was buried here. Of the friary buildings, including the church, nothing now remains. It was suppressed in the reign of Henry VIII.; but the 15th century choir stalls were removed to Beaumaris church, where they still are, and some of the monuments are still existing in other places. The stone coffin of the Princess Joan, with her bust, and a winged dragon-like figure, with foliage sculptured in relief upon the lid, is carefully preserved in a small building erected for the purpose in the grounds of Baron hill, the seat of Sir R. H. Williams-Bulkeley bart. In Llandegai church is preserved an alabaster tomb of the 15 th century, believed to have been removed from Llanfaes, and there is another translated monument of the 14th century in Penmynydd church, and one of the 15th century at Beaumaris. In the friary grounds is a broken sepulchral slab, with the matrix of a brass to an archdeacon, a fragment of the marginal inscription remaining.
The area comprises 1,638 acres, of which 10 are water; the population in 1891 was 229.
Letters through Beaumaris.
St. Catherine’s Church, Rev. Thomas Lloyd Kyffin M.A, vicar; Rev. Morris Griffith B. A. curate.
