Historical Description
Newburgh, or according to Mr. Davies, the late rector, Rhosvair, in confirmation of which he adds the following englen.
Mae Ilys un Rhosvair, mae Ilyn,
Mae ur-gloch, mae Arglwydd Llewelyn,
Agwyr tal yn ei galyn,
Mil myrdd mewn gwyrdd a gwyn.
Here has been an ancient residence of one of the princes of Anglesea; the foundations of the palace were visible in Mr, Rowland’s time, and a little south of the church is supposed to have been its chapel.
Edward I. made this place a corporation, from which originated the present name of Newburgh. Its principal manufactures are mats and ropes, made of sea reed grass, a plant very common here. Newburgh was famous for John Morgan, an old blind musician, who alone, it is said, preserved the ancient instrument called Crwth, the original of our present violin. Two miles north-west of Newburgh is Llan Gadwalader, a church which had lately over its door a coffin lid with an inscription for a prince who governed North Wales about the sixth century, and active in the battle of Bangor-Iscoed, between the Britons and Saxons.
NEWBOROUGH, anciently called Rhos-fair, was at one time the most important place in the Isle of Anglesey; and at the time of the conquest of Wales by Edward I. was the seat of justice for the whole of Menai. The town received a charter from Edward II., when prince of Wales in 1303, afterwards confirmed by him as king, in 1324, and by later monarchs; the Corporation was dissolved in 1814; the mace, existing in 1834, is now lost; the borough seal now belongs to Thomas Prichard esq. of Llanerchymedd. The assizes, held here in 1505-50, were at the latter date transferred to Beaumaris. Newborough, with its contributory boroughs, had the privilege of returning a member to parliament from 1536-1547, when it was disenfranchised on its own petition. Afterwards the burgesses claimed the privilege of sharing in the election of a member for Beaumaris, but their claim was disallowed by parliament.
The town, which is now little more than a village, is 9 miles south-west from Menai bridge, about 3 west-north-west from Foel Ferry, opposite Carnarvon, and 5 south-east from Bodorgan station, on the Chester and Holyhead line of the London & North-Western railway, in Llanidan sub-registration district union and county-court district of Carnarvon, Anglesey first petty-sessional division, rural deanery of Menai, archdeaconry and diocese of Bangor, situated east of the Malltraeth marsh, in the southern extremity of the county. The manufacture of matting is carried on here to a considerable extent, and gives employment to a number of the inhabitants.
St. Peter’s church, an ancient edifice in the Early English style, consists of chancel, nave and north porch; the bell gable contains two bells, one of them put up in 1892 was found in a house in Llanddwyn. Formerly the building consisted of two distinct churches, St. Peter’s the present nave, St. Mary’s the present chancel, one belonging to the parish the other to the Royal court. The joints could be plainly seen in the walls before it was plastered and restored in 1892. On either side of the chancel is a recess, each containing a tomb with a recumbent figure, one is of an archdeacon in full canonicals with a cup in his hand. The font is a Saxon one. The Court Llys (Royal court) stood in a field adjoining the church; it is now called Cae y Llys. The church contains a piscina, and there is also a leper’s dole. The registers date from the year 1721. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge during the year 1894 equals £185, 9s. 6 ½d.; net yearly income £150, with residence and 1 ½ acres of glebe, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1882 by the Rev. Richard Evans M. A. of University College, Durham. There are chapels for Independents, Baptists, Wesleyans and Calvinists.
