Historical Description
LLANAFAN is a village and parish, on the river Ystwith, in the county of Cardigan, 2 miles north-east from Trawscoed station on the Manchester and Milford railway, and 9 ¾ east-by-south from Aberystwyth, in the hundred of Ilar, petty sessional division of Ilar Upper, Aberystwyth union, and county court district, and in the rural deanery of Llanbadarnfawr, archdeaconry of Cardigan and diocese of St. Davids. The church of St. Avan, rebuilt about 1860, is a plain but ancient edifice of stone, and consists of chancel, nave, south transept, south porch, and a belfry containing 2 bells: the east window is stained, and there is an old record chest: there are 190 sittings, of which 150 are free. The churchyard was enlarged in 1891, with ground presented by the Earl of Lisburne. The registers of baptisms and burials date from 1750; marriages, 1767, but the entries are very imperfect up to 1813. The living is a vicarage, gross yearly value £100, net £96, in the gift of Miss Chichester of Arlington Court, Devon, and held since 1886 by the Rev. William Jones-Williams B.A. of St. David’s College, Lampeter, who is also vicar of Llanwnws. There are two Calvinistic Methodist chapels. Trawscoed, or Crosswood, a mansion which, in the reign of Queen Elizabeth, was a seat of the Earls of Essex, is now the residence of the Earl of Lisburne D.L., J.P. The manor is vested in the Crown. The principal landowner is the Earl of Lisburne. The soil is a light loam; chief crops are oats, barley and roots. The area is 2,577 acres of land and 33 of water; rateable value, £1,880; the population in 1891 was 381.
Parochial school, built in 1858, and restored in 1875 by the Earl of Lisburne, who also maintains it; average attendance, 51 boys, 35 girls.
LLANAVAN.
This parish derives its name from St. Afan, the son of Cedig ab Caredig ab Cunedda, who likewise founded two churches in Buallt, a district of Brecon, whence he is styled Afan Buallt. It is situate on a very picturesque bend of the Ystwyth, over which a new bridge has here been erected.
The church stands in a pleasant situation, about half a mile from the river Ystwyth, over which there is a bridge called Pont Llanavan. It is dedicated to St. Afan, and consists of a nave and south transept; which last contains the pews of the Crosswood family, and under which is their vault. An avenue of yew trees leads directly to this transept from the entrance of the churchyard. It is a perpetual curacy, and in the gift of the Chichester family. This family pays £6 13s. 4d. to the minister, and receive all the tithes themselves.
The four last incumbents were: Stokes, of Pembrokeshire; 1750, Edward Griffiths, of Carmarthenshire; 1780, Thomas Davies, of Pant y fedwen; 1800, David Jones, of Grogwynion.
Part of the ancient screen which divides the chancel from the nave of the church still remains, and exhibits some light elegant carved work. The font is octangular, and very low from the ground. There is a very curious silver dish, gilt, used for the bread at the Sacrament. It was presented to the church by one of the Earls of Lisburne, and has twelve figures embossed on it. Ten representing, warriors, and two dragons. They are all engaged in combat, two and two. One pair represents a man shooting a winged dragon with his cross-bow. Next to this is a man with a sword and shield, cutting down another with a halbert and ragged staff. Then one with a cross-bow shooting another with a sword. Afterwards a man with a sword thrusting at another with a spear and shield at his back. Then a man with a spear and shield thrusting against a dragon. Afterwards a man with a staff and shield parrying off the thrust of a spear made at him by another. (See Pl. XI.)
On the south wall of the nave is a green stone monument, thus inscribed:
“In Memory of Jane Morgan wife of Griffith Morgan, who was interr’d the 28th of December 1779 aged 67 years.
Does neb mor lew affoi o law,
yr angau dewr at bawb y daw
Cays gymod hawdd dy dduw a’u hedd
Cyn mynd or byd i wailod bedd.”
On the east wall, and north of the altar, is a black stone mural mouument, inscribed as follows:
“Underneath this stone lyeth interr’d ye body of John Williams Gent. Son of the Revd Mr. William Williams Minister of this Parish. He departed this life much lamented by all his acquaintance on the 7th day of May & buried ye 8th 1762. Aged 33 years.”
“Here also lieth the Body of the Revd. Mr. William Williams late minister of this Parish who died May the 22nd 1763, aged 69 years.”
On the wall above the Crosswood pew, is the arms of Viscount Lisburne, surmounted by a viscount’s coronet, and supported on the dexter side by a griffin, and on the sinister by a unicorn. It is quarterly, first and fourth sa. a chev. argent between three fieur de Us of the second, third, and fourth; argent on a fess gu. three escallop shells or, between three eagle’s heads erased sa. Motto, “Non revertus invitus.”1
CROSSWOOD
The noble mansion of the Earls of Lisburne is now the residence of the Hon. Colonel Vaughan, brother of the present Earl. Its Welsh appellation is Traws-coed, i. e., a wood across, or in a traverse direction; and from this it has gained its present English name. The tradition in the neighbourhood concerning this estate, is the following, viz., That Crosswood was given to the Earl of Essex by Queen Elizabeth; and was afterwards, in the year 1640, purchased of the trustees of the son of the young Earl (afterwards general of the Parliament forces) for the sum of four thousand pounds, and an annuity of two hundred pounds per annum, which he afterwards bought up. This, however, can only be reconciled with the pedigree, by supposing the estate to have been forfeited to the Crown by the Vaughan family, in which it had been many years antecedent to the above-mentioned period; but
I have not been able to ascertain this.2 The house is large, the park handsome, and the farm in the highest state of cultivation. Indeed the Hon. Colonel Vaughan may be ranked among the first persons in the county for his agricultural knowledge and improvements.
The pedigree is as follows:
The following character is given of Sir John Vaughan, in a MS. written about the year 1661, entitled, “A true Character of the Deportment for these 18 years last past, of the principal Gentry within the Counties of Caermarthen, Pembroke, and Cardigan, in South Wales:
“John Vaughan, one that will upon fitts talke loud for monarchy; but scrupulous to wet his finger to advance it. He served burgess for Cardigan in the long parliament; but quitted it upon Strafford’s tryal; named by his Majesty one of the Commissioners to attend the treaty in the Isle of Wight; but refused it; personally advysed Cromwell to put the crown on his owne head; purchased Mevenith, one of his late Majesty’s manors, within the county of Cardigan; personally assisted in the taking of Aberystwyth, a garrison then kept for his late Majesty. These services kept him from sequestration; bore offices in the late several governments. He is of good parts; but putts too high a value on them; insolently proud and matchlessly pernicious; by lending eight hundred pounds to Colonel Philip Jones, and other favourites of the late tymes, procured the command of the county he liveth in to continue his friends, and dependents to this day.”
There is an engraving of this Sir John Vaughan, in Philip Yorke’s Royal Tribes of Wales. Sir John left a son, Edward Vaughan, Esq., who was living in the year 1693, and married Laetitia, daughter of Sir William Hooke, Knt. of London; the issue of which marriage was, John Vaughan, Esq., who was created by King William, by patent, dated June, 1695, a baron and viscount, by the titles of Viscount Lisburne, Lord Vaughan, Baron Fethers, in Ireland. He married Mallet Wilmost, third daughter of John, Earl of Rochester. His lordship dying in 1721, left issue by her, three sons and three daughters. Of the daughters, Anne married Sir John Prideaux, Bart., of Netherton, in Devonshire; Elizabeth and Laetitia died unmarried; Henry died unmarried; and John, the second viscount, married, first, Miss Bennet, daughter of Sir John Bennet, Knt., serjeant-at-law, who dying, he married, secondly, Dorothy, daughter of Richard Hill, Esq., and died without male issue in 1741, when the honours descended to Wilmot, the third viscount. His lordship, in December, 1727, married Elizabeth, eldest daughter of Thomas Watson, Esq., and died January 19, 1766. He left two sons and one daughter, Elizabeth, married to Thomas Lloyd, of Abertrinant, in the county of Cardigan, Esq., and died January, 1784. John, a major-general in the army, who was in August, 1793, invested with the military order of the Bath, and died 30th June, 1795. The other son being the eldest, named Wilmot, succeeded his father in January, 1766. He was raised to the dignity of an Earl, July 16, 1770. He married, first, Elizabeth, daughter of Joseph Gascoyne Nightingale, Esq., by Elizabeth his wife. She died May 19, 1755, and left one son, Wilmot, born May 9, 1755, who succeeded his father in the earldom, January 6, 1800, and enjoys the title at present. His father married, secondly, April 19, 1763, Dorothy, daughter of John Shafto, Esq., by whom he had issue, John, born March 10, 1760, who now resides at Crosswood, and Elizabeth, born May 13, 1764, and since married to Sir Lawrence Palk, Bart.
The Hon. Colonel Vaughan is heir presumptive, and married August 2, 1798, Lucy, sister to Viscount Courtenay, and has five sons, the eldest of which was born May 6, 1799.
- The Earl’s motto in the peerage is, “Non revertar inultus.”
- I may appear to the public remiss in not having given a more exact account of this estate. But the fault does not rest with me. My friend, the Hon. Colonel Vaughan, though a very pleasant companion, did not, in this instance, keep his promise, having positively assured me that I should have all the MSS. and papers relating to Cardiganshire, from the library at Mamhead. It is said there is a life of Sir John Vaughan, preserved there, but I could never procure it, or any of the other papers.
