Historical Description

LLANARTH is a parish and village in the county of Cardigan, 3 ½ miles south-east-by-east from Aberayron, 13 north-west-by-west from Lampeter station, on the Manchester and Milford railway, and about is north-east from Cardigan, in Moyddyn hundred, Aberayron union, county court district and petty sessional division, and in the rural deanery of Glyn Aeron, archdeaconry of Cardigan and diocese of St. David’s. The church of St. Vylltyg is an ancient edifice of stone, of Norman date, and comprises chancel and nave, a south porch, and a tower with spire, containing 3 bells: the font is a work of the nth century: the church was restored in 1870, and affords 320 sittings. Near the church is an ancient stone bearing a cross. The registers of baptisms and burials date from 1735; marriages, 1754. The living is a vicarage, with that of Llanina annexed, tithe rent-charge £382, average £222, net income £350, in the gift of the Bishop of St. David’s, and held since 1894 by the Rev. Thomas Meredith Williams B.A. of St. David’s College, Lampeter. The Church of the Holy Trinity, at Mydroilyn, erected in 1890, as a chapel of ease to St. Vylltyg’s, is a structure of corrugated iron, lined with wood, and has 150 sittings. There are also Calvinistic Methodist, Congregational and Wesleyan chapels. The principal landowners are the Bishop of St. David’s, Mrs. Longcroft and Lieut.-Col. the Hon. Cuthbert Ellison Edwardes. Kelly's Directory of South Wales (1895)

LLANARTH

Is an extensive parish, and divided into six hamlets. In it is a very large square intrenchment, called Castell Moeddyn; and on a farm, called Pen voel, is another old intrenchment, called Pen-y-gaer. On a large heath, in this parish, is a tumulus of earth called Crug Coy.

In this parish formerly stood the castle called Castell Mabwynion, or, as the Rev. Evan Evans explained it, Meibwn Gwgnawn. Its situation was probably near Vaenog, where there is a valley still called Cwm Castell. In the year 1216 this castle was allotted to the share of Rhys, the son of Gruffydd ab Rhys, by Prince Llewelyn. It had been before taken by this Rhys, commonly called the Lord Rhys, in the year 1165, from Roger de Clare, Earl of Gloucester, and razed to the ground, so that it must have been rebuilt at the time it was allotted to him in the distribution above mentioned.

The church stands on the summit of a high hill, on the western side of a river, which falls into the sea at Llanina. It is a handsome building, consisting of a nave, chancel, and massive high tower. It is dedicated to St. Vylltyg.

It is a vicarage, and what is remarkable, the vicar enjoys the whole of the tithes. This is in consequence of the lay impropriator leaving by his last will his share to be annexed to the vicarage. It is in the gift of the Bishop of St. David’s; and the living is estimated as worth £500 per annum.

The names of the last incumbents are, 1752, the Rev. —. Brooks, the Rev. —. Howels, and the Rev. —. Richards.

On the pulpit is the following inscription, made with coffin nails: “The Gift of Tho. Lloyd, Esq., 1774.”

On the east wall of the chancel are two very handsome monuments; the one on the north side has the following inscription:

“Near this place lieth the remains of Jane the wife of John Davies of Cardigan Gent who died the 20th of July 1753, Aged 26 years. She was the daughter of Edward Jones of Llanina, Esq. and Margaret his wife. This monument is erected as a grateful Tribute to the memory of a Wife and friend who was possessed of every virtue which could make her life beloved or her death regretted. Here also lieth the remains of Mary Jones sister of the above said Jane Davies, who died Novr the 30th 1764.”

The one on the south side is inscribed as follows:

“Near this place rest the remains of Richard Lloyd the 1st Son to David Lloyd of Wernewidd in this County Esq. late one of the head Surveyors of the customs, and Mary his wife only Daughter of Edward Price of Ystradfine in the county of Carmarthen Esq. who departed this life the 20th of July 1767. In pursuance of whose will this stone is erected by his Nephew and Execr Thomas Lewis of Nantwillt in the county of Radnor. To the memory of his Grandfather Watkin Lloyd his said father David Lloyd and three Brothers Watkin, Edward, and David the eldest of whom died in the flower of his age, and lies interr’d in St Dunstan’s Church in the East, London. There Edward likewise paid his debt to nature in 1754 Aged Sixty three, and lyes bury’d in Audley Chapel Grosvenor Square. David departed this life in the Mediterranean in 1748, and found his grave in the Deep.”

The arms on this monument are Lloyd and Lloyd quarterly, being first and fourth sa. between three scaling ladders argent, a spear’s head imbrued; on a chief of the second, a tower triple towered gu.; second and third sa. three horses’ heads erased argent. Some small remains of carved work on the screen in this church are still to be seen, and its font is very curious. It is the section of an inverted pyramid, cut parallel to its base, and is supported by four lions courant.

In the churchyard, on the south side of the church, is an ancient stone, bearing the sign of the cross, on which was formerly an inscription, though now almost wholly effaced, as all the letters that remain are..... NRI.......... C........ Whether the three first letters are part of the word Henricus, is now mere conjecture. It was no doubt erected somewhat about the sixth century. It is four feet six inches above the ground in height, and about two feet ten inches broad. The cross being in alto relievo, it continually decays. (See Plate IV., Fig. 4.)

A tree now grows out from the centre of the stone steps which once held the cross.

The village of New Quay is in this parish, where there is a small pier, and an excellent well-sheltered road for shipping. The pier is almost in ruins, being merely formed of stakes driven into the sand, and stones placed round them. It has a good outlet, and is much frequented by smugglers; and the sea water is here in its perfection. A perch is much wanted at the extreme end of that patch of foul ground called Carreg Ina, which would render it a safe road for large shipping.

Y WERN NEWYDD

This mansion, as well as Llwyndavydd, was honoured by the presence of the Earl of Richmond, who was here entertained by Inon ab Davydd Lloyd, in a style of hospitality suited to his rank, the next night after he had been at Llwyndavydd. It is now the seat of David Edward Lewes Lloyd, Esq.

Edward Lloyd was high sheriff for the county of Cardigan in the year 1721, and married a daughter of Richard Stedman, of Strata Florida. He was a grandfather to the present owner, Col. Edward Lewes Lloyd, of Dol-haidd.

NOYADD LLANARTH,

Is the seat of Colonel Brooks, who inherits this estate from his mother, the only daughter of James Griffies, of Noyadd Llanarth. His father came from England, was chaplain to Dr. Smallwell, Bishop of St. David’s, and vicar of Llanarth. James Griffies above-mentioned, married Gwenllian, daughter of Watkin Lloyd, of Wernnewydd, in this parish. The porch of the house is curiously ornamented.

LLANINA CHURCH.

The church is newly erected, and is a neat little edifice, standing near the sea side, at the end of a well-wooded dingle. It is a chapel of ease to Llanarth, though part of the hamlet pays a share of the expenses of Llanllwchaiam.

LLANINA HOUSE,

The residence of Edward Warren Jones, Esq., is pleasantly situated in a cove near the sea, not far from New Quay. It came to the Jones family from Daniel Gwyn, who dying without issue, left it to Edward Jones his half brother.1 He was a descendant of Cadwgan Grach, of Carog ab Cadwgan Vychan ab Cadwgan vawr ab Rhys ab Rhydderch ab Cadivor.

  1. Lanina at one time formed part of the Moel-Ivor family possessions, but Daniel Gwyn left it by will from his own brother John Gwyn, to his half brother Edward Jones, of Lanina, by which the Jones’s became possessors of the Lanina estate. Some suspicions having arisen as to the manner the will was obtained, and possibly the right of this bequest, the question was tried in the reign of Charles the Second; and the Gwyns of Moel-Ivor lost the cause by the supposed treachery of their own attorney.
