Historical Description
LLAN-Y-CHAIARN is a parish and village in the county of Cardigan, 2 miles south of Aberystwyth and 1 mile north-west of Llanrhystyd Road station on the Manchester and Milford railway, in the hundred of Ilar, petty sessional division of Ilar Upper, union and county court district of Aberystwyth, rural deanery of Llanbadarnfawr, archdeaconry of Cardigan and diocese of St. David’s. The church of St. Uchan, or Hychan, at one time a chapel of ease to the church of Llanbadarnfawr, is a building of stone consisting of chancel, nave, north porch and a turret containing one bell: the stained east window is a memorial to Emma, wife of Matthew Davies esq. of Tan-y-bwlch, and there, is another to C. P. Leir esq. The church was restored and enlarged in 1874—80, at a cost of £1,600, and affords 250 sittings. The registers of baptisms and burials date from 1803; marriages, 1754. The living is a vicarage, tithe rent-charge £6 13s. 4d. gross income £110, net £98, with glebe, in the gift of M. L. Vaughan Davies esq. and held since 1888 by the Rev. Richard Lewis, of St. Bees, who resides at Aberystwyth. There is a Church of England Mission chapel, erected in 1878, at a cost of £500, and a Calvinistic Methodist chapel. The principal seats are Tan-y-Bwlch, M. L. Vaughan Davies esq. D.L., J.P.; Brynyreithin, Mrs. Richardes; and Ffosrhydgaled, Captain Thomas Powell Lewes. A pack of foxhounds is kept at Tan-y-Bwlch, of which M. L. V. Davies esq. is master. The manor is vested in the Crown. The principal landowners are W. B. Powell esq. Nanteos Morris Davies esq. and M. L. V. Davies esq. Soil is clay; the chief crops are wheat, barley and potatoes. The area is 4,060 acres; rateable value, £3,584; the population in 1891 was 471.
A School Board of 5 members was formed 14 June, 1874; Edward H. Davies, clerk to the board; John Morgan, attendance officer.
Board School (mixed), built in 1876, for 150 children; average attendance, 63.
LLANYCHAIARN.
The parish of Llanychaiarn is situated on the sea side, which bounds it on the west, as does the river Ystwyth on the north and east, and the parish of Llanddeiniol on the south.
The church stands most delightfully on an eminence, overhanging a beautiful curve of the river, and flanked on each side with venerable oaks. It is an ancient building, and its porch contains a good specimen of the earliest use of the pointed arch. It is dedicated to St. Llywchairn, a saint who lived in the seventh century. This is a perpetual curacy, and in the gift of the Chichester family, who have all the tithes, and allow the minister £6 13s. 4d. per annum.
The names of the five last incumbents are: 1730, John Edwards; 1763, Isaac Williams; 1768, David Price; 1783, Richard Lloyd, A. M.; 1805, Richard Morgan.
The font, though made for total immersion, is much more modem than the church. On the north wall of the church is a mural monument with the following inscription:
LLANYCH AERON HOUSE.
LLANYCH AERON CHURCH."Arise ye dead and come to judgment. And he shall send his Angels with a great sound of a Trumpet. Arise ye dead and come to judgment. Near this place lie interr’d the earthly remains of Morgan Evans late of Pen y Graig in this parish, who departed this life for the acquisition of an eternal inheritance on the 9th day of September 1792 in the 56th year of his age.”
On the east wall, north of the communion table, is the following, on a black mural monument:
“Sacred to the memory of Mr. Evan Evans late of Berthrees in this parish who departed this life Nov. 22d 1800 aged 60 years. O Death where is thy sting? O Grave where is thy victory? Thanks be to God who giveth us victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Cor. chap. 15, ver. 55 & 57.”
Over the communion table is a double monument, thus inscribed:
“Underneath lie the earthly remains of Erasmus Lloyd formerly of Aberllolwyn in this parish Gent, who in the month of 7ber 1688 exchanged this life for a blessed immortality ag’d 61 years. Here is also deposited the mortal part of his son Hugh Lloyd Esq. a Gent of no ordinary capacity ye strictest probity exemplary piety much esteemed whiles living and no less lamented at his death w°h happen’d 8ber 20th 1732 ir ye 66 year of his age.”
On the same wall, but on the south of the altar, is a handsome monument, with black pilasters, on which is the following:
“In memory of Thomas Hughes of Aberllolwyn Esq. the affectionate husband, tender parent, and sincere Christian, who with uncommon serenity of mind resigned his breath to the Almighty giver 30 January 1771 aged 74. Also Elizabeth his wife
Who in the paths of heaven bom virtue trod
A close observer of the laws of God
A foe to none a friend to all mankind
A heart sincere with an exalted mind
Who early took religion for her guide
Liv’d with strict honour, and with honour dy’d
January 5th 1768 in the 73d year of her age.”
MORVA,
Formerly called Morva bychan, is the residence of Miss Hughes, and is situated on the sea side.
aberllolwyn.
This estate has been long in possession of the family of Lloyds. Miss Lloyd, the daughter and heiress of Hugh Lloyd, married Thomas Hughes, of Hendre velin, about the year 1720. He had one son and four daughters. Aberllolwyn was left to the eldest daughter, who married Edward Hughes, of Duffrin gwyn in Merionethshire. He dying without issue, about the year 1794, left it to his wife, who, at her decease, left it to her niece, Miss Hughes, of Morva, the present proprietor.
In a bog, called gors y rhudd, a very curious ancient shield was found by some people cutting turf. It is circular, and above two feet in diameter. It is made of brass, and ornamented with concentric circles, about an inch distant from each other, entirely covering it, and with small knobs between these. Its great peculiarities, however, are its being quite flat, except in the centre, where it is convex, made so purposely to admit of the hand; and its being held only by the hand, and not fixed on the arm. It is very thin and light, but was, no doubt, once lined with hides. The workmanship is too neat to allow our ascribing it to the Britons; and among the numerous Roman vases collected by Sir William Hamilton, which exhibit the arms and dress of the Romans, there is no painting like it. The only shields used by the Romans, we know, were the Scutum and Clypeus, the former an oblong, with a spike jutting out of the middle, called the umbo; the other circular also with the umbo, which in this was sometimes a spike, and sometimes a hemisphere, or an ornamented head. Yet all the representations of shields on the above mentioned vases are convex. But the Romans could not be ignorant of this kind of shield held in the hand, as there is an ancient statue of Minerva, brought from the Ducal palace of Modena, now in the national gallery at Paris, holding a clypeus in the left hand. But this again is convex. It cannot be a Saxon shield, as the Saxons were never near this county, yet we find the Saxons had circular convex shields, with convex boxes; for there is a drawing of a Saxon king with his soldiers thus armed, done in the eighth century, in the Cotton library, in a MS. marked Claudius, B. IV. This indeed may be considered as a peculiarity of the Saxon shield; and we find the same kind used in the tenth century, as appears by a manuscript in the Harleian library, marked 603, written at that time. (See Pl. XX. Fig. 2.)
