Historical Description
LLANDYGWYDD is a parish and village in the county of Cardigan, on the river Teifi, 2 ½ miles from Kilgerran station on the Whitland and Cardigan section of the Great Western railway, 4 ¼ south-east-by-south from Cardigan, and 269 from London, in Troedyraur hundred, union and county court district of Cardigan, petty sessional division of Lower Troedyraur, rural deanery of Subalton, archdeaconry of Cardigan and diocese of St. David’s. The church of St. Dygwydd, rebuilt in 1857, is an edifice of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, transept, south porch, and a western tower with spire, containing 6 bells, recently hung: the church was decorated in 1882, and affords 265 sittings. The registers date from the year 1613. The living is a vicarage, gross yearly value £300, net £270, with 4 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Bishop of St. David’s, and held since 1874 by the Rev. David Francis B.A. of St. David’s College, Lampeter. The Mission chapel (Capel Tygwydd), was erected in 1882, at a cost of £800, and affords 180 sittings. There are also Congregational and Methodist chapels. The principal seats are Blaenpant, the residence of Mrs. Brigstocke, Penylan, of Morgan Jones esq. and Noyadd Trefawr, of Captain Webley-Parry-Pryse. Mrs. Brigstocke is the principal landowner, but there are several small freeholders. The land is chiefly in pasturage. The area is 5,494 acres, rateable value £4,105, and the population in 1891 was 880.
National School (mixed), and Infants, erected in 1834, for 120 children; average attendance, 86.
LLANDYGWYDD. This takes its name from Tegwydd, the daughter of Tegid, and the wife of Cunedda Wledig, a saint who lived in the former part of the fifth century. There is a church dedicated to her in Gwent, where she was killed by the pagan Saxons.
The manor and lordship of Llandygwydd, and the demesne lands of Llwyndyrys, belonged to the Bishop of St. David’s. In a survey of this lordship, taken in the year 1660, is the following: “Item, in the said county of Cardigan lyeth the Lopp. of Llandygwy, part of the Lord Bishop of St. David’s estate, the chief rent whereof is for two years, and to be paid doubly every third year; and besides the chief rent aforesaid, there is 8s. 4d. yearly payable for work money for the two years of single payment, and not to be paid when the chief rent is double, the alienation is 5s., the herriot or mortuary 7s., the gwaglaw 7s. Suit at two court-leet years, by the gayle tenants, freeholders, rescvants, &c.”
In this parish, near Cenarth bridge, is the renowned salmon leap, and not at Cilgerran, as mentioned by Camden. Close to the cataract there is a pool, in circumference about twelve yards, formed by the projection of the rock, where the water making an eddy, is not so much agitated as by its fall above; and here the salmon, when foiled by his attempt to mount the cataract, as it were, takes rest, and is often taken by a man with a spoon net on a long pole; for which privilege he pays to the Reverend David Rogers, on whose estate this leap is, about thirty pounds a year.
It may be here observed, that on the Teivy the fishery is almost destroyed, by the practice of fishing without restraint during the spawning season; so that the salmon has of late years been seldom less than from sixpence to one shilling per pound, which used to be sold forty years ago for about one penny or three farthings the whole fish.
In this parish, not far from Noyadd, were in Edward Lloyd’s time, some remaining pillars of a stone circle, called Meini hirion, larger, though of the same kind as Meini gwyr, in Caermarthenshire, but none of these are now to be seen.
CHURCH
The church is dedicated to St. Tegwydd. It is a prebend in the collegiate church of Brecon, having been transferred from Abergwily at the dissolution. The Rev. Thomas Griffith, A. M., now holds it, and nominates to the curacy.
The edifice has been just rebuilt in a neat elegant manner for the small sum of three hundred pounds. It consists of a nave and chancel, communicating by means of a pointed arch.
The font is octagonal, and ornamented with quatrefoils.
On the eastern wall of the nave is a handsome mural monument, on which is inscribed as follows: —
Near to this place lyes interred ye body of David Parry of Noyadd Esq. who dy’d
ye 29th of Nov. 1711 aged 52 years. And also the body of John Parry, Esq. who dy’d
ye 23rd of July 1722 aged 78 yrs. Near likewise to this place lyes the body of

memory this monument was erected at the Charge of Anne Parry of Noyadd widow,
Relict of the sd. Stephen and Sister to the abovesaid David Parry.
’Tis neither goodness vertue wealth long pedigrees nor orphan’s tears

From death we pass to life to Christ I goe freed from fears
Him to enjoy and in him all I crave
Behold I hear him call and bid me mount above ye starry poles
Born up on Angels wings

To the eternal King
To die is gain.
The arms of the above monument are quarterly; first and fourth a lion rampant; second, a chev. between three fleurs de lis or. in chief a lion rampant of the second; third vert, three stags’ heads or. On a black stone, on the north wall of the chancel, is the following inscription: —
Near to this place lyes interr’d the Body of Grace late wife to James Lewes Gent
who changd. this life for a Better the nth day of Janry. 1700 Aged 50 years. Also
here lyeth ye Body of ye fore sd. James Lewes of Pengalltgybie Descended from Prince

county below Eiron Dyed ye 18th of March 1716 aged 65 years.
The sacramental cup bears the following inscription, “Poculum Edesie de Llan Dogwy 1573.”
LWYNDYRIS
This estate belonged to the bishops of St. David’s, and was leased at the reserved rent of four pounds thirteen shillings and fourpence, to the Byrts, Wogans, Symmons, and Griffith, till the year 1800, when the bishop, by virtue of an Act of Parliament, sold them for the redemption of the land-tax, to the Rev. Thomas Griffith, the present proprietor. The pedigree of the Byrt family is as follows: —
The present mansion was erected a few years ago by the Rev. Thomas Griffith, and stands upon an elevated spot, overlooking the Teivy meandering through fertile meadows. In the grounds is the site of the original edifice, which was moated; and the second residence now forming part of the offices to the new building. Under the new house, on the left hand, close to the turnpike road leading to Cardigan, is a large mount, or tumulus, in height about eight yards. On the upper part of the farm is a bed of excellent blue marl, eleven feet in depth, which is used as a manure to great advantage; and in the same field is an old circular intrenchment called y gaer.
BLAEN PANT
This mansion is now the property of Colonel Owen Brigstocke,1 though formerly of a family named Jenkins. The last of the Jenkins’s being a co-heiress married William Brigstocke, of Llechdonny, in Caermarthenshire, and on his death this estate came into the possession of his brother, Owen Brigstocke, Esq., who married a daughter of Sir Thomas Brown, great great uncle of the present possessor. This Owen Brigstocke was the collector of the valuable library at Blaen Pant, which was probably of use to the antiquary Dr. James Philips, who lived at this house ten or twelve years, during the minority of Colonel Brigstocke’s father; and was one of the correspondents of Lewis Morris, Dr. Pegge, &c.
This is a large handsome mansion surrounded by thriving plantations.
Colonel Owen Brigstocke’s arms are quarterly or. and sa. three escalops counter-changed.
PENYWENALLT
This was formerly the residence of Evan Griffith Evans, nicknamed Captain Tory, who “for his king fought, and bled”; two of whose grandchildren were Captain John Evans, grandfather of the present possessor, John Griffiths, Esq.; and the Rev. Theophilus Evans, the celebrated antiquary. He was born in the year 1694, and was the fifth son of Charles Evans of Pen y wenallt, by his second wife, Elinor Benyon, of Llangoedmore, widow. He married Alice, daughter of Morgan Evan, or Bevan, of Gelli galod, in Glamorganshire, and left issue three sons and two daughters. The sons died without issue; one of the daughters, Elinor, married Hugh Jones, clerk, vicar of Llywel, whose son is the present Theophilus Jones, of Brecon, historiographer of that county. The other daughter, Sarah, married Timothy Davies, of Merthyr Tydvil, by whom she had issue.
Mr. T. Evans was ordained deacon in 1718, and priest in 1719, by the then Bishop of St. David’s. His first curacy was Tyr yr abad, a chapel in the hundred of Builth, erected by Sackville Gwynne, of Glanbran; and in the year 1728 the bishop gave him the small rectory of Llan-ynys, in Breconshire. He afterwards had the living of Llangammarch, which he ceded in 1763, and was succeeded by his son-in-law, Mr. Jones. He died vicar of St. David’s in 1767. His first publication was in Welsh, and entitled, “Pwyll i pader”: this appeared in 1739, and in the latter end of the same year the “Drych y prif oesoedd,” or “Mirror of the Days of Yore,” of which his countrymen still retain the highest opinion. His last publication was in 1752, and entitled, “A History of Modern Enthusiasm,” reprinted in 1759.2

Leslie, Esq., the present owner, who, at a considerable expense, has completed and fitted up this place in a superior style of magnificence.
PENCWN
The present house was erected by Mr. Green, brother-in-law to Colonel Brigstocke, of Blaen Pant, who bought this estate, which before had only a common farmhouse on it. It is now the property of Morgan Jones, Esq.
