Kelly's Directory of South Wales (1895)

LLANILAR.

The parish, which gives name to the hundred, is situated on the southern side of the river Ystwyth, between Llanychaiarn, and Llanwnnws. It is divided into two parcels, upper and lower, and also into hamlets.

The church is situated on the southern bank of the river Ystwyth, and is dedicated to St. Hilary. It consists of a large square tower at the west end, a nave and a porch. It is a vicarage, and in the gift of the Bishop of St. David’s. The tithes of this parish are thus divided. Dolvawr hamlet pays one half to the vicar and one half to the Chichester family. Middle hamlet pays one third to the vicar, except Llidiarde, Tyny coed, Plwca, Berthlwyd, Penlan, and Cefncoch, which pay one seventh to the vicar, and the rest to the Chichester family. Eglwys hamlet pays one third to the vicar, and the rest to the impropriator. Rhydybrynarth hamlet one half to the vicar, and one half to the impropriator. Grugwen hamlet pays one third to the vicar, except Trefaes Isaf, Trefaes Uchaf, Mynyddmawr, Penlan las, and Tyn y berth, and part of two fields in Abermaide; from this farm the vicar has one third, Mr. Powel, of Nant Eos, one third, and the rest goes to Mr. Chichester. In the porch is an ancient stone for holding holy water, and over the door, an ancient beam bearing an inscription in very old characters, the initial of names, and supposed to be intended for “J. S. W. W. A. 1431 Church Wardens.” It has three heads carved on it in the middle, and two figures of animals at each end. On the gallery in the church were formerly carved two dragons, and the inscription, “David Morgan, and Richard Jones, Church Wardens, 1683.” The font is octagonal.

The names of the five last incumbents were: —. Roberts, John Morgan; William Hughes, of Glanr’avon; Daniel Williams, of Caermarthenshire; 1798, Owen Owen, of Aberystwyth.

The chancel is separated from the nave by a screen of elegant Gothic carve-work; near which, on the north wall, is the following inscribed monument, bearing a plain shield and a Hon passant guardant for a crest.

“S. To the memory of John Morgan the son of John Morgan Vicar of this parish who having for many years with true Christian patience endur’d the most enquisite pains of a confirm’d stone in the bladder in a firm composure of mind and a humble resignation to the will of God was cut on in London June the 23d and departed this life the 24th 1757 in the twentieth year of his age. The stone taken from him was large and solid weighed 3 ½ ounces, of the following shape and colour. His body was interr’d in the new burying ground belonging to St. Andrew’s Holborn.”

Near the above, on a greenish stone, is the following:

“To the memory of the Rev. Mr. Moses Roberts inducted to this Vicarage in May 1691, & called to receive the reward of his indefatigable pains in ye discharge of ye duties of his function on the 2d of Feby 1730. His body lies on the other side of the wall opposite to this stone set up here by his daughter Mrs. Jane Lloyd in ye year of our Lord 1735. Aged 77.”

On a flat stone in the pavement of the chancel,

“Elizabeth Evans of Glan yr Afon only daughter of Evan Evans of the same lieth here interr’d. She, in ye bloom of her years not fully sixteen apprehensive of a CHANGE was by God’s will deliver’d from the misery of her mortal to an eternal life Feby. ye 10th 1741. The death of such a hopeful young person is much lamented by all, but most by her mother Jane Lloyd who erected this tomb to her memory.”

On a black mural monument, on the north wall of the chancel,

“To the pious memory of John Morgan Clerk Vicar of this parish, who changed this mortal life for immortal one January the 15th 1762 aged 62 years. And also Ann relict of the said John Morgan who died April the 12th 1763.”

In the church-yard was formerly a monument to the memory of Margaret Evan, on which was the following excellent Welsh epitaph, which is here on that account inserted:

Rw'y beunyad yn llonydd vy lie—Diau

Y Deuwch vel finnau

O’r byd i’r bedd fiaidd vau

Drwy dynged dan draed Angau.

Over the north door of the church was formerly this inscription:

Morgan Parry, and Jenkin Richard, gen. churchwardens for the year 1712, and were the first founders of black cloth in this parish.

Mr. Richard Jones, of Howard Street, in the Strand, London, who was treasurer of the Welsh Charity School, left nine pounds per annum, three per cent, consols, towards the teaching twelve poor children of this parish.

ABERMAID

Stands beautifully on an arm of the river Ystwith, and was the seat of the ancient family of the Jones’s. The last Thomas Jones sold it to Robert Lloyd, of Oswestry, Esq., who bequeathed it to his son, and on whose death it became the property of his grandson, the present possessor.

LLIDIADE,

A name signifying “the gates,” is the residence of the ancient family of Parry. It seems they have been in the possession of this, and many other estates near it, ever since the time of Queen Elizabeth. The pedigree of this family is as follows:

The present proprietor of Llidiade, Thomas Parry, Esq., is deputy-lieutenant, and magistrate for the county. He has made a very pretty place of this, which, besides being a good farm, has a fine plantation of firs and other timber. The family arms are argent a chev. az. between three fleur de lis of the second in a chief az. a mullet pierced argent, crest a lion rampant.

CASTLE HILL,

So called from an old redoubt not far from the house, is the property of John Williams, Esq., now a minor. The estate belonged to various families, and was, among others, connected with Crosswood, Hafod, Abermayde, &c., but was at different times purchased by the late worthy John Williams, Esq., father of the present proprietor. In the year 1777 he erected the present mansion, and planted forest trees and firs to a very large amount. His father was Nathaniel Williams, tenant of the abbey of Strata Florida, but his grandfather was —. Williams, of Pant Sheriff, near Tregarron, which estate Mr. John Williams inherited from his uncle. He married Miss Jones, of the ancient family of Trevwythan, in Montgomeryshire, by whom he had issue the present John Williams, the minor. His arms are az. a chev. between three stags heads erased.
