Kelly's Directory of South Wales (1895)

LLANRHYSTID,

Is so named from St. Rhystid, to whom the church is dedicated. He was the son of Hywel Vychan, ab Enyr Llydaw, and lived in the early part of the sixth century. He was one of those religious persons who accompanied Cadfan from Armorica to Britain. He was for some time bishop of Caerlleon-on-Usk, in Monmouthshire. This village stands on the banks of the little river Wiarri, near where it empties itself into the sea. Leland says, “Ther hath bene great building at Llanrhustyt, a mile lower on the Se banke than Llansanfride, in Cardiganshire, and sum suppose that ther hath bene a nunnery.” Tanner also mentions that there was a nunnery here, but I cannot now find the least traces of such a building.1 Whether the house called Mynachty, in this parish, was it or not, I cannot tell. In the year 988 Llanrhystid was destroyed by the Danes, who committed such havoc in South Wales, that Prince Meredydd was glad to buy them off.

The castle called Castell Rhos, which stands on the estate of J. Lloyd, of Mabws, Esq., must have belonged to Jorwerth ap Owen; for except this and the castle of Llanfihangel, in Pengwern (probably the Genau’r Glyn) the whole of Cardiganshire was taken from him by Cadell, Meredydd, and Rhys, in the year 1150. Eight years afterwards it was fortified by the Earl of Clare.

In this parish is a very extensive dreary morass, called Rhos y mhiniog, over which the road was intolerably bad about five and twenty years ago, so much so, that the Cardiganshire poet, of whose muse a specimen has been given before, wrote the following:

Os oes im Elyn boed iw ran

Y veldith anrhygarog

Vynd, wrtho ei hunan wedi nos

Dros geven Rhos y Mhiniog.

Translated.

If I’ve a foe deserves my hate,

The dreadful fate betide him,

To go by night o’er Mhiniog bog,

Without e’en dog to guide him.

The church is an ancient building, consisting of a tower, the top of which has fallen down many years ago: a nave, chancel, and porch. It is a vicarage, and in the gift of the Bishop of St. David’s.

The four last incumbents were: 1730, the Rev. —. Herbert, A. M.; 1734, the Rev. Richard Morris; 1747, the Rev. Jenkin Jenkins; 1764, the Rev. Isaac Williams.

The date on a pew in this church is 1629. There are some remains of an ornamented screen.

YSTRAD TEILAU,

Now used as a parsonage house, is the property of John Lloyd, of Mabws, Esq., and probably took its name from Teilau, the son of Hydwn Dwn ab Ceredig ab Cunedda Wledig, one of the most celebrated saints of the British Church, who lived in the latter part of the fifth and beginning of the sixth centuries. Under the superintendence of Dyvrig he established a college at Llandaf, which, after his name, was called Banger Deilo, and this was afterwards made into a bishopric, generally called by the Welsh, Esgobaeth Teilo. There are several churches dedicated to him in South Wales, as Llandeilo Fawr, Llandeilo Creseni, Llandeilo Vernallt, Llandeilo Glyn Llychwr, Llandeilo Aber Cowyn, and Llandeilo Berth Oleu. This saint was distinguished with Dewi and Padarn, under the appellation of the three holy visitors of Britain, because they went about preaching the gospel without any reward, and with Dewi, and Catwg, as the three canonized saints of Britain; and probably the spot was honoured by a sermon from St. Teilau.

The first person who dwelt at Ystrad Teilau, and probably erected the first edifice there, was Richard Lloyd, who married the daughter of Morgan Herbert, of Havod Ystrid, in the sixteenth century. His father was Jevan Lloyd, son of John Llanbadarn vawr ap Jevan goch ap Llewelyn ap Rhys ap Cadwgan, descended from Elystan Glodrydd.

The following is the pedigree of the Lloyds of Ystrad Teilo:

This heiress married James Lloyd, Esq., of Troes y Bleiddied, who, in her right, possessed this estate. He built a house in this parish, called Mabws, and Ystrad Teilau has ever since been let to tenants.

The arms of the original Lloyds of Ystrad Teilau are, quarterly first and fourth gu. a Hon rampant regardant, or; second and third argent, three boars’ heads couped sable; which were again quartered with the arms of Games, viz. argent a wild boar chained to a tree proper.

MABWS,

Supposed to be a corruption of Maybush, is a very large edifice, situated in a vale, through which runs the little river Wirrai. It was erected by John Lloyd, Esq., of Troes y Bleiddied, and Ystrad Treilo, father of John, who married Elinor, daughter to John Allen, of Dale Castle, in Pembrokeshire. As she was an heiress, he, of course, in her right, possessed Dale Castle. This worthy gentleman, John Lloyd, now of Mabws, has two brothers and three sisters, Colonel James Lloyd, and Vaughan Lloyd, Esq., who died at Rhode Island; Maria, eldest daughter, who married Admiral Thomas, of Llanvaughan; Louisa and Elizabeth, who both died unmarried; John Allen Lloyd, before mentioned, first married Elizabeth, daughter to Harry Bishopp, son of Sir Charles Bishopp, by whom he has three sons, John, Harry, and Richard. The arms of the present family of Mabws are composed of the following. The Troes-y-bleddied, the Llanllyr (being the same as those of Castle Howel), the Ystrad Teilau quartering the Tregaer, and the Dale Castle, the Troes-y-bleddied family having married heiresses of the rest.

The motto of the Mabws family is, Ar Dduw y gyd, i. e., On God depends every thing.

MOEL IVOR,

Now only a farm-house, was formerly the residence of two ancient families. It is situated on the side of a hill, from which it has the name of Moel y vawr. The first family who resided here were the Gwyns, who came from Carog, in the parish of Llandeiniol, and their pedigree is as follows:

Moel Ivor is supposed by some to be the same as Llanrhystyd Castle, mentioned in Powel’s History of Wales, and it stood formerly opposite the present house on the other side of the valley. It was pulled down in the reign of Queen Elizabeth, about the year 1565, by Jenkin Gwyn, when he served the office of high sheriff for the county; and a large mansion house erected where the present one stands. The family who afterwards inherited it, having principally resided at Dolhaidd and Cringae, in Carmarthenshire, this venerable old mansion became neglected, and so ruinous, that about twenty years ago it was pulled down, and the present farm-house erected in its stead.

  1. Mr. Malkin, without the least hesitation, boldly asserts that “the traces of a monastic institution in the buildings at Llanrhystid are interesting.” Every tourist into Cardiganshire has mentioned Lech yr Ast, Lech y gawres, Meini hirion, and Meini cyvriol, as still existing, though they have been destroyed many years ago. These, and innumerable falsities and inattentions, constitute tours in Wales, and shew how little they are to be depended on.
