This parish is included in Ystrad Meurig & Lledrod Upper United School Board district, formed is June, 1875.

Board School, Lledrod Lower, built in 1877, for 90 children; average attendance, 60.

Board School, Swyddffynon, Upper Lledrod, for 90 children.

Kelly's Directory of South Wales (1895)

LLANFIHANGEL LLEDROD,

Otherwise Lletherhod, is divided into two parts, Lledrod Isaf, and Lledrod Uchaf. In this parish is a large square intrenchment called Gaer vawr.

The church is dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel, and consists simply of a nave, like most in this county. It is a perpetual curacy, and is in the gift of the Prebendary of Brecknock.

In the distribution of tithes, Lledrod Uchaf is thus divided. One-third is payed to the Earl of Lisburne, and the rest to the impropriator, except in the hamlet of Llwydffynnon, where the Earl of Lisburne takes one-third, the Prebendary of Brecknock one-third, and the remainder to the impropriator.

A paltry rough, unhewn stone in the churchyard, to the east of the church, is all that serves to point out the grave of that celebrated genius, the Rev. Mr. Evan Evans. This eminent divine, poet, and antiquary, was born at Cynhawdref, in this county, about the year 1730, and was educated at the grammar-school at Ystradmeirig, under that celebrated man Mr. Richards, formerly master of that school. He inherited a small freehold in this county, on the banks of the Rheidol, which he conveyed over to a younger brother for the paltry sum of one hundred pounds, which was to support him at the university. He was entered at Jesus College, in Oxford, about the beginning of the year 1751. After leaving college he officiated as curate in several places, and more particularly at Newick, in Kent, Llanfair Talhaiarn, in Denbighshire, and Towyn, in Merionethshire. Mr. Evans shewed an early attachment to the Welsh muse, and was soon noticed by Mr. Lewis Morris, the famous antiquary and bard, who conceived a favourable judgment of his abilities from some of his juvenile compositions in his native language. Indeed he employed all his leisure time in the cultivation of Welsh literature, and his attention was unremitted towards the ancient Welsh manuscripts, which he transcribed, and of which labour he left behind about a hundred volumes of various sizes. Having passed a great part of his life in such pursuits, without being able to procure the smallest promotion in the church, his fortitude deserted him, and to drive away his vexations, he fell into a habit of drinking, that at times produced symptoms of derangement in him, which precluded his chance of obtaining any new friends, likely to make reparation for those who ought to have rewarded his merit. In the year 1764 he published a quarto colume, entitled “Specimens of Welsh poetry;” with these poems were given literal translations, and he added to them a “Dissertatio de Bardis,” in which he has displayed his superior skill in ancient Welsh poetry; and his Latin syle is by no means despicable. He was an excellent Greek scholar, and late in life he studied the Hebrew language, in which he made a considerable proficiency. His other works were an English poem, called, “The Love of our Country,” several Welsh compositions, printed in the “Diddanwch Teuluaidd,” and two volumes of Sermons, by Tillotson, and others, translated by him into Welsh. The preface to these sermons breathes an ardent love of his native country and language; but it shews some irritability of temper m the author. Indeed his disposition was violent, especially when he expressed himself upon a subject which related to this country’s wrongs. Dr. Warren, when Bishop of St. David’s, allowed him a handsome annuity, and Paul Panton, Esq., of Plasgwyn, in the island of Anglesey, and Thomas Pennant, Esq., of Downing, in the county of Flint, were afterwards indefatigable in their endeavours to raise an annual subscription for his support; in which laudable undertaking they succeeded beyond expectation. However P. Panton, Esq., apprehensive lest the labours of so ingenious a man should, upon the death of their author, be either destroyed or dispersed, agreed to allow Mr. Evans a handsome annuity for life, upon being put into immediate possession of all his MSS., and he in consequence of this now possesses them. Mr. Evans died at his brother’s house, in the month of August, 1789, in the fifty-eighth year of his age. In his person he was tall and athletic, and of a dark complexion. From his height he obtained the appellation of Prydydd-hir, or the tall poet, by which he was generally known.

The Rev. Thomas Oliver, a native of this parish, but at the time of his death, vicar of Dudley, in Worcestershire, gave lands and money for the endowment of a perpetual grammar-school for the benefit of a limited number of the poor boys of his native district. By his will, bearing date in the month of May, 1745, he left for that purpose a small farm, which he possessed by inheritance in that parish, and the sum of four hundred pounds to be laid out in the purchase of other lands.

These he vested in trustees for the uses specified; but the power of nominating a master, from time to time, was given to John Lloyd, Esq., of Ffoesybleidded, in this parish, and to his heirs for ever. But Mr. Oliver died before the end of a year from the date of his will, and consequently this public-spirited donation became void in law. But his generous widow, and sole executrix, Dorothea Oliver, renewed the gift in its full extent, and by enrolling a deed in Chancery, and appearing in person in that court, gave it full force in law. In this beneficial act she was much assisted by the advice of Mr. Lloyd’s eldest son, the late James Lloyd, of Mabws, Esq., who had been brought up to the profession of the law, and was then in about the twenty-fourth year of his age. He took a journey to Dudley, got the deed drawn up, saw it signed and executed, and procured it to be enrolled in Chancery. But previous to this, his father and he, at the request of the widow, had laid out four hundred pounds in a judicious manner. Two or three pretty extensive farms had been purchased, which by this deed were settled, together with Mr. Oliver’s own farm, on the school for ever. The names of them are as follows, viz., Briwfosydd, and Fforypilwrn, in the parish of Llanrhystid; Pant y scythan, and Blaenjago, in the parish of Llandyssul; Dol, a cot and garden, in the town of Tregarron, and a small field and house (once intended for the school-house) at Swydd y fiynnon, in the parish of Lledrod; together with Mr. Oliver’s original farm, Ynys y garn, in the same parish; all in the county of Cardigan.

The first master of this school was Mr. Edward Richard, of Ystradmeirig. The second, the Rev. J. Williams.

FFOES-Y-BLEID DIAID,

Now only a farm-house belonging to John Lloyd, Esq., of Mabws, was formerly the family residence of his ancestors. This is a very ancient family, and trace their pedigree from Owain Gwynedd,1 Prince of North Wales. It is as follows:

This James Lloyd, Esq., resided at Ystrad Teilo, and his descendants have lived at Mabws, in the parish of Llanrhystyd, ever since. The arms of the Lloyds of Foes-y-Bleiddiad,2 which mean in English, the Wolves’ moor, are az. a wolf rampant argent. These arms are quartered with those of Lloyd, of Llanllyr, on account of the marriage with an heiress of that family.

  1. This is an error. A lineal descent in the male line has been proved from Cadifor ab Dyfnwal, and the right to bear his arms, as is recorded at H. M. College of Arms, as recently as 1902. Cadifor was 9th in descent from Rhodri Mawr A. D. 843, King of All Wales, and so back to Coel Godebog, the 75th British King, the middle of the 3rd century, and so to Beli Mawr, sovereign of Britain (see Burke’s Landed Gentry, 1906, for the full recorded descent, under the families of Lloyd.-Philipps of Dale Castle, representing the senior branches of the Ffos-y-Bleiddied family, Lloyd late of Danyrallt representing the junior branch, and Lloyd of Delfryn representing the junior branch of the latter. )—E. D.
  2. Ffos-y-Bleddied means “the ditch, trench, or dyke of the wolves.” The arms given here were those of Tudwal Glof, a son of Rhodri Mawr, and his descendants, of whom Cadifor was one, but they were superseded in Cadifor’s case, when, for taking Cardigan Castle from the Earl of Clare and the Flemings A. D. 1164, he was given the following: Sa. a spear head imbued between three scaling ladders ar., on a chief gu. a castle of the second” (see page 149 Castell Hywel). These are the arms of the Lloyds of Ffos-y-Bleddied, as lineal descendants of Cadifor, and not from the marriage with Llanllyr. Tudwal Glof’s arms, however, form one of the many quarterings to which the family is entitled. —E. D.
