Historical Description
PENBYRN is a parish in the county of Cardigan, on the shore of Cardigan Bay, 8 miles east-by-north-east from Cardigan, the terminal station of the Whitland and Cardigan section of the Great Western railway, 8 north from Newcastle Emlyn, 12 north-west from Llandyssil, and 13 south-west from Aberayron, in Troed-y-raur hundred, Newcastle Emlyn union and county court district, Penrhywpal petty sessional division, and in the rural deanery of Sub Aeron, archdeaconry of Cardigan, and diocese of St. David’s. The church of St. Michael, placed on the summit of an eminence overlooking Cardigan Bay, is an ancient building of stone, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, porch, and a belfry containing 1 bell; the church was repaired in 1878 and affords 200 sittings. The registers date from the year 1726. The living is a vicarage, tithe rent-charge £345, average £255, net income £188, with 5 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Bishop of St. David’s, and held since 1888 by the Rev. Thomas Jones B.A. of St. David’s College, Lampeter. St. John’s mission chapel at Sarnau was built in 1889, at a cost of £615. There are also Baptist and Congregational chapels. At Castell Nodolig and Pwnton are remains of ancient camps. Mrs. Brigstocke of Blaenpant is lady of the manor; the land is mostly held by small freeholders. The soil, is slate, subsoil gravel. The chief crops are oats and barley and a portion of the land is under pasturage. The area comprises 8,535 acres, rateable value £4,006; the population in 1891 was 1,302.
PENBRYN,
Or Llanvihangel Pen y bryn, lies also on the sea shore, and is very extensive. On a farm in this parish, called Cevn Lletre, is a very high mound of earth encircled by three ramparts, which has evidently been a strong fortified place, and is still called “Castell.” A quarry of stone having been found within it, the intrenchments have been greatly destroyed. Near the same farm is another tumulus, called Castell pridd. On another part of this farm was destroyed, about twenty years ago, a carnedd, and an earthen pot, containing ashes, found within. On the farm of Blaenhofnant is a large carnedd; and there are two more not far off; all of these are about one mile and a half from that on Tyll coed, in the parish of Llangranog, and were formerly called the four graves.
In this parish is a small village named Sarnau, near a farm called Pwyll glas. It took its name from several paved roads across the bog just adjoining. These were composed of large stones, but narrow, and were probably military ways; but as no trace of them now remains, it might be difficult to say whether they were of British, Roman, or Welsh construction. Not far from the church, Mr. Llwyd took notice of a large rude stone, which once stood in a small heap of stones, close by which it then lay, on which he read “Cor Balenci jacit Ordous,” and interpreted it, “the Heart of Valencus, of North Wales, lieth here.” Although he declares himself by no means satisfied with such a conjecture, yet he copied the inscription very correctly, and the heap of stones he mentions were removed about two years ago, when some silver coins were found, and an urn containing ashes. The field in which this stone stands (as it is now erect, measuring about five feet in height, two feet three inches broad at bottom, and about one foot four inches at top) is called Parc Carreg y lluniau, and is part of the estate of Dyffrin Burn, belonging to Mr. Jenkins. (See Plate IV. Fig. 2).
There is a stone in this parish called Llech yr ochan, near a well called Fynnon wedog, or “the bloody,” probably from some battle which happened near it.
Bishop Gibson mentions that a British gold coin was likewise found in this parish, similar to those he found at Carnbre, in Cornwall, and about the weight of a guinea. From this, and many of the like coins found in other parts of the kingdom, he tells us Mr. Llwyd concluded that the Britons had gold and silver money of their own, before the Roman conquest. For as such of these as want inscriptions are always a little hollow on one side, and have also characters different from the Romans; it is plain the art of coining then was not learnt from the Romans, for had that been the case we should have rather met with Roman letters, such as by some coins of Caswallan, and Cynfelin, we find they made use of after the conquest.
About a mile and a half from Pwllglass, close to the high road, is an old British encampment called Castell Nadolig, very large, and double trenched, though the line of circumvallation is in some places destroyed, so that the form of the area is no longer as perfect and distinct as might be wished. The farm house on the estate bears the same name. From the old intrenchment was, about twenty years ago, a paved road, stretching to the northward for a mile. It was made of very large stones, and was ten feet wide. It passed to the north of a tumulus called Crug Coy.
In this parish is Traeth saith, which is reckoned the finest shore on the coast for bathing. The origin of this name has, and will still perhaps puzzle many. Literally translated, it would be, “seven shore,” but as that cannot be sense, Theophilus Evans, in “Drych y Prif Oesoed,” says, “saith” is an Irish word, signifying shallow, which I think might be the case, some words being retained in the Irish language which are lost in the Welsh, and vice versa. William Owen, Esq., the ingenious author of the Welsh dictionary, conjectures that its name might have been Traeth Sei Thenin, from the king of that name, noticed in the poem about Cantrw gwaelod. Tradition says that it had its name from the seven daughters of a king being wrecked there, having been put by order of their father into a vessel without sails or oars; and continue to assert that they took possession of the seven best farms in the county, the names of which all end in “an,” and that they had plenty of meat from a house called from that Llawn ymborth, abbreviated into Lamborth. A poem commemorates this tradition.
There is a flat rock on the beach in this parish called Carreg Morynion, or the maiden’s rock, from some girls, about a century back, going to bathe from it on a Sunday, and being drowned.
CHURCH
The church, which is situated on a rock by the sea side, is dedicated to St. Michael, and is a vicarage, in the gift of the Bishop of St. David’s. One half of the tithes belong to the vicar, the other to Mrs. Price.
The three last incumbents were the Rev. Mr. David Turnor, the Rev. Mr. William Holcomb, and the Rev. Mr. Isaac Williams, of Ystrad Teilau.
The church consists of a nave and chancel, parted from each other by a pointed arch; the porch also exhibits the pointed style of architecture. In the south wall of the chancel is a wide arch, which formerly contained a monument, and in the nave there appears to have been another. The font is a square bason.
On a black stone, on the south side of the arch, forming the entrance to the chancel, is the following: —

In the churchyard remain the steps of a stone cross, probably destroyed at the reformation.
LLANBORTH
Llamborth, Llongborth, or, according to the story of Traeth saith, Llawnymborth, still bears marks of antiquity. Its pointed doorway, antiquated windows, and ivymantled roof, bespeak the many centuries it has witnessed. It was formerly the seat of Rhys ab Rhydderch, Lord of Towyn, who married Alson, daughter to Sir James Bowen, of Pentre jevan, Knt., by whom he had four sons and two daughters. By another wife he had several other children; among others,
This estate, for want of an heir, was escheated to the lord of the manor, Sir Herbert Lloyd, of Peterwell, about fifty years ago, and is now with that estate in the possession of Colonel Bailey Wallis.
ABERNANT BYCHAN
Is an ancient edifice, though not the original one on the estate, that having stood a little to the south-east of the present building. The arch of the door is of the pointed ellipse, and the wainscot within the house, from its carved work, and the figures on it, seems about the date of Elizabeth’s reign. The mould in the garden is said to have been brought from Ireland, and the vulgar add, on that account no venomous reptile will live in it.
It is now the property of Loveden Loveden, Esq., of Buscot, Park, Berkshire, but formerly of the Lewes’s, one of the most renowned families in the county. Their genealogy is as follows: —
Sir John Lewes, Knt., above mentioned, was the last who resided here, and ever since it has belonged to the Gogerthan estate.
DYFRYN-HOWNANT,
Or the desirable valley, once belonged to the Vaughan family, but afterwards became the property of Albany Wallis, Esq., and is now in possession of Colonel Bailey Wallis.
