The church of St. Pedrog, rebuilt, with the exception of the tower, in 1853, is a building of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, porch, and a western tower of Norman date, containing 1 bell; the east window is stained and there is a fine modern font; the communion plate includes a silver chalice dated 1615. The church affords 120 sittings. The registers date from the year 1769. The living is a vicarage, tithe rent-charge £80, average £60, net income £65, in the gift of H.R.H. the Prince of Wales K.G, and held since 1875 by the Rev. Daniel Harries Davies B.A. of St. David’s College, Lampeter, who is also vicar of Mount, and resides at Cardigan. There are Baptist and Methodist chapels. The soil is light loam; subsoil, rock. The chief crops are barley, oats, wheat, some green crops and a portion is under pasturage. The area is 2,980 acres, rateable value £2,029; the population in 1891 was 328.
A School Board of 5 members, for the united district of Mount & Verwick, was formed 19 April, 1875 Ivor Evans, Cardigan, clerk to the board; Henry Davies, attendance officer.
Board School (mixed), for Verwig & Mount, built in 1874, for 80 children; average attendance, 50.
VERWIC.
In this parish is a farm called Nant y Flynion, which takes its name from the Flemings having landed at a beach near a small brook just by. The desperate resistance they met with is confirmed by a large heap on this farm near the sea, composed of the bones of the invaders, which freqeuntly now appear, as the wind disperses the sand in which they are buried. This mound of sand is very near Mownt Church, and the tradition is, that the Flemings having landed on a small beach called Traith y Mwnt, were met by the natives, where a bloody battle ensued on the first Sunday after new year’s day, which, from that circumstance, was called the “Red Sunday,” in Welsh, “sul coch.” This appellation was given, no doubt, in consequence of the blood shed on that day.
The neighbourhood were accustomed to meet on that Sunday, till within a few years ago, when wrestling, kicking, and football usually took place. This meeting, as was too often the case on such occasions, frequently ended in quarrels and bloodshed. It appears to have been an anniversary commemorating a victory; as the recollection of a defeat would hardly be revived.
CHURCH
This church is a vicarage, and in the gift of the Prince of Wales.
It is dedicated to St. Pedrog, the son of Clement, Prince of Cornwall, who lived about the beginning of the seventh century. There is a church also dedicated to him in Pembrokeshire, and another in Caernarvonshire.
The two last incumbents were the Rev. David Davies and the Rev. Mr. James.
The church consists of a square tower at the east end, a nave, chancel, and porch. Over the latter is the date, 1627. It commands a view across the Teivy into Pembrokeshire. Within the church is the font, highly ornamented; which is a square bason on a pillar. A large pointed arch forms the communication between the nave and chancel, and a smaller one between the nave and tower.
On the east wall of the chancel, and north side of the altar, is a black stone monument, and on it,
“Near this place lieth the Body of David Davies Eldest son of the Rev. Mr. Evan Davies Vicar of this parish who departed this life the 15th day of Nov. 1737 aged 16 years.”
At sixteen years my life was spent
When God his Messenger hath sent
To call me to my Brother’s home
My resting place the day of dome.”
In this church are the remains of a white alabaster monument, now lying on the ground, viz., a slab turretted along the edge, six feet long and two feet broad. There is also a piece of free stone two feet four inches in length, and one foot nine inches in height, on which are carved six figures, standing in as many highly ornamented niches, which appear to be very ancient and much mutilated. Another piece of the same height as the last, and one foot six inches in length, has a single figure on it in a niche, but much more ornamented. It is probable that all these were parts of a monument to some Norman lord, who at one time possessed Verwic.
TREGIBY
This was anciently a seat of the Philips’s of the Priory, in Cardigan, in the account of which their pedigree has been given.
TOWYN
The first edifice at Towyn was erected by Gwilym ab Einon, constable of the castle of Cardigan, who slew the Irish that dwelt at Pitchert, for firing the house of his foster-father. His pedigree is traced as follows, in an ancient manuscript in the possession of Colonel Lloyd, of Mabws.
* Thus the MS. but I cannot tell where this Aberconwy could be. If Julius Caesar be the right person, it must have been in England.
Gwilym ab Einon got arms in France, which he afterwards gave for his own. Edward Llwyd, in his MS. pedigrees, says, “I found in an old manuscript pedigree of the family of Towyn, this Gwyllym, called son to Owain ab Robert ab Einon vawr of Coed, or the wood, and his mother Lleyky, daughter to Grufydd ab Llewellyn Vychan.”
The place is now merely a farm house, the property of A. T. S. Gwynne, of Tyglyn, in this county.
CRUGBYCHAN
This was the seat of a family named Bowen, whose genealogy is as follows: —
The arms of this family were gu. a chev. between two de lisses, in chief; and a lion rampant in base or.
This is now simply a farm house.
HEOLYCWM
This is now the property of Griffith Jones, Esq., of Cardigan, and is a respectable house, though of no antiquity.
