Historical Description

Gresford, chiefly noticed for its beautiful church, and six bells. It stands on a rising ground at the

end of the village, built of free-stone, in length 123 feet, 59 broad, with a quadrangular tower, 90 feet high, and on one side a fine statue of Henry

The east window, which is 21 feet by 14, has been full of beautiful groups, appearing to be the history of the several saints to whom the church is dedicated, with a few figures of the Virgin Mary in the middle, and under each group sentences in her praise: her history is also in the east window of the north aisle. In the south aisle is a figure completely armed with mail, a surcoat, and round helmet; his legs are not across, but he has a lion at his feet and likewise on his shield, with this inscription on the ledge of the tomb: Hie jacet Madoc ab Llewelyn ab Gryffydd. There is a similar figure in the north aisle, but the inscription is entirely concealed by the pews. Against one of the pillars is an inscription for a Mr. John Robinson, who died in 1681. Near Gresford, is the Rofts, a strong British camp, treble trenched, having at one corner a vast mount or keep.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

Gresford, a village and parish and a station on the Shrewsbury, Wrexham & Chester line of the Great Western railway, is 3 miles north-north-east from Wrexham, in Bromfield hundred, county of Denbigh, sub-registration district of Holt, Wrexham union, county-court district of Wrexham and Llangollen, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Wrexham, diocese of St. Asaph, situated at the head of a picturesque valley through which the river Alyn flows. The parish church of All Saints’, in the middle of the village, is about 400 years old, and is a fine edifice in the Early English style, with a quadrangular tower 90 feet in height, and containing a peal of 8 bells, noted for the sweetness of their tone and regarded as one of the seven wonders of Wales. This church is further noted for its stained glass and carved screen, and the eastern window especially for the great variety of figures and perfect colouring. The interior contains many monuments, and is capable of seating 650. Near the church is a very old yew tree, which is estimated to be 400 years old. The registers date from the year 1660. The living is a vicarage, tithe rent-charge £465, net income £359, and house, in the gift of the Bishop of St. Asaph, and held since 1891 by the Venerable Archdeacon David Howell B.D. There is a chapel for Wesleyan Methodists. Close to the village are the remains of a treble-trenched British camp, having at one of its angles a lofty mount. From the brow of Marford hill, about a mile north-east of the church, a fine view is obtained of the splendid Vale Royal of Chester, the towers and spires of the ancient city forming the centre of the picture. There are a number of fine seats in the neighbourhood,-The Clappers, of Thomas H. Dixon esq.; Hoseley hall, of Colonel Rigby; and Gresford bank, of Thomas Oakes Wright esq.

Marford is a small village, and Borras Hoval and Llay are townships in this parish.

The area comprises 1,025 acres, of which 6 are water; the population in 1891 was 853.
