Historical Description

Bodfari is a small village and parish in Rhuddlan hundred, county of Flint, 4 miles north-east from Denbigh, 6 south-east of St. Asaph, and a railway station on the Mold and Denbigh line, sub-registration district and union of St. Asaph, rural deanery of Denbigh, archdeaconry and diocese of St. Asaph: the parish is delightfully situated on the borders of the counties of Flint and Denbighshire, and near the confluence of the rivers Clwyd and Wheelor; the road from Denbigh to Mold passes through the village. The church of St. Stephen, an ancient edifice of 13th century date, is a plain stone structure, with a lofty square embattled tower; the pulpit and reading desk bearing the date of 1574 are of black oak beautifully carved. The registers date from the year 1571. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £243, net income £226 and residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Llandaff, and held since 1891 by the Rev. Samuel Frederick Phillips of St. Bees. The Baptists, Calvinistic and Wesleyan Methodists have chapels here. East of the village is Moel-y-Gaer, 1,280 feet in height.

The area comprises 1,494 acres, of which 5 are water; the population in 1891 was 427.
