Historical Description

Cilcen, Cilcain or Kilken, is a parish and small village in the hundred of Mold and county of Flint, 4 miles north-west from Mold and 7 south from Holywell, and about 2 ½ miles south-west from Rhydymwyn station on the London & North-Western railway, on the slopes of Moel Fammau (1,823 feet), and contains the townships of Cefn, Llan, Llysduahunedd, Lwysycoed, Maesgroes, Mechlas, Trellan and Trellynian. It is in the Holywell union, and county-court and petty sessional district of Mold, rural deanery of Mold, archdeaconry of Wrexham and diocese of St. Asaph. Parts of the parish were assigned in 1848 to Rhes-y-Cae, and in 1865 and 1873 to St. John’s, Ehydymwyn. The church of St. Mary is an edifice of Early Perpendicular date, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle and a western tower banded with brick. The church is principally remarkable for its fine oak roofs, which were certainly not constructed for it, and are said to have been brought from Basingwerk abbey, of which, however, there is no sufficient proof. The chancel portion is carved, the nave roof is on the hammer beam principle, the main supports being ornamented with large carved figures of angels holding shields, and all the open portions are filled with varied tracery; these roofs were satisfactorily repaired about 1845 under the direction of Mr. Ambrose Poynter F. S. A. architect, and in 1888 the church was restored at a cost of £1,730, and affords 267 sittings. The registers date from the year 1576. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £240, net income £190, with 11 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1885 by the Rev. John Felix of St. Bees.

The area of the parish comprises 6,570 acres, of which 8 are water, and the population in 1891 was 740.
