Historical Description
Mostyn, with Mostyn Quay, is a populous village and an ecclesiastical parish in the civil parish of Whitford, 4 miles north-north-west from Holywell, 7 northwest of Flint, and is a station on the Chester and Holyhead line, in the rural deanery of Holywell, archdeaconry and diocese of St. Asaph. The living of Christ church is a vicarage, gross income £300 with residence and 4 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Bishop of St. Asaph, and held since 1879 by the Rev. Griffith Jones of St. Bees. There are chapels for English and Welsh Congregationalists and Calvinistic and Wesleyan Methodists. The Darwen & Mostyn Iron Co. Lim. have extensive works here; and at the Llanerchymor works, belonging to the North Wales Lead Works Lim., lead ore is extensively smelted and manufactured; these works give employment to a large number of the inhabitants. Mostyn hall, the seat of Lord Mostyn, is a fine mansion situated in a beautifully undulating park, and is historically interesting from Henry, earl of Richmond, afterwards Henry VII., having been hidden here; on one occasion Richard III. despatched a body of armed men to arrest the earl, who, however, contrived to escape through a hole in the back part of the house, which is still called the King’s Window, and was afterwards joined at the battle of Bosworth Field by Richard-ap-Howel, then lord of Mostyn, to whom, after the victory, he presented the belt and the sword he wore on that day. Plas Llanerchymor is the seat of Adam Eyton esq. JP. Mynydd-y-Garreg, a circular tower of great height, is a very old structure, and is supposed to have been a pharos or lighthouse.
