Historical Description

OVERTON is a parish and small town, the head of a petty-sessional division, and a contributory parliamentary borough, in the county of Flint, about 5 miles east from Ruabon station on the Great Western railway, 5 north-north-west from Ellesmere (Salop) and 7 south from Wrexham, in the hundred of Maelor, Ellesmere union, county-court district of Wrexham, and in the rural deanery of Bangor-is-y-Coed, archdeaconry of Wrexham and diocese of St. Asaph. The town was formerly a municipal borough, and received its first charter from Edw. I. in 1278, and in the 20th year of his reign (1291-92) that monarch, by a new charter, made it a free borough, with liberty to the burgesses to elect three bailiffs, one of whom should be bailiff of the town, and this charter was confirmed in 1294-95; in 1830 some of the inhabitants agreed to elect a mayor on condition of his entertaining them at a dinner; the borough was scheduled in the Municipal Corporations’ Act, 1883 (46 & 47 Viet. c. 18), as a place to which these Acts might be applied, and the corporation is now, apparently, extinct; no seal or insignia are known.

Under the provisions of the Reform Act, 1832 (2 & 3 Will. IV. c. 45), Overton, together with seven other places, was formed into a parliamentary district (known as the “Flint Boroughs”) returning one member.

The town is beautifully situated on rising ground near the river Dee, here crossed by a stone bridge of two arches, uniting the counties of Denbigh and Flint. The church of St. Mary, originally cruciform, is an edifice of stone chiefly in the Early English style, and now consists of chancel, nave, aisles and a lofty tower of later date with an embattled circular turret, and containing six bells; the north aisle was enlarged about 1830; the east window is stained, and there is a memorial window to the Rev. George John Howson M. A. rector, 1879-88, and others to the Kenyon family. The church affords 550 sittings. The churchyard is remarkable for the unusual number and extraordinary growth of the yew trees within its limits. The registers date from the year 1602. The living was declared a rectory 3rd April 1868; average tithe rent-charge £418, net income £252, with residence, in the gift of the Duke of Westminster K. G., and held since 1888 by the Rev. John Wolsey Unwin B. A. of St. Peter’s College, Cambridge.
