Historical Description

Penley, a small parish in the hundred of Maelor, county of Flint detached, is 9 miles east-south-east from Ruabon, 9 west from Whitchurch and 4 north-north-west from Bettisfield railway station, in Overton sub -registration district, Ellesmere union, Wrexham county-court district, Overton petty-sessional division, rural deanery of Ellesmere, archdeaconry of Salop, diocese of Lichfield, situated on the road from Overton to Hanmer. The church of St. Mary was formerly a chapel of ease to St. Mary’s, Ellesmere; it dates from 1796, and affords sittings for 365. The registers date from the year 1752. The living is a vicarage, annual value £143 and residence, in the gift of the vicar of Ellesmere, and held since 1873 by the Rev. Robert William Foulger of St. Aidan’s. Llanerch Panna is the seat of the Hon. George Thomas Kenyon M. P. D. L. JP.

The area comprises 2,124 acres; the population in 1891 was 321.
