Historical Description

Rhuddlan lies on a flat, in the middle of the vale of Clwyd, and on the eastern bank of the river two miles from its influx with the sea, where it is sufficiently wide to permit small vessels at high-water to ride up to the bridge. This was once a considerable town, but now only a small borough, which with those of Rhuddlan contribute to elect a representative for Flint.

Rhuddlan derived much importance from its elegant castle, wherein Edward I. kept three Christmases. It is a square building, erected with a red stone, surrounded by a double ditch on the north, with a strong wall and foss all round. Below the hill, on the river side, is a square lower, called Twr-y-Brennin, or the King’s Tower.

The walls enclose an irregular square, with galleries and apartments all round: the north appears much shattered, but the other two are pretty entire. To the south of the castle they show amount, called Tut-hill, from whence the inhabitants say it was battered; but it appears a more ancient fortification, surrounded by a deep ditch, including the abbey. It may have been the residence of our ancient Welsh princes, perhaps burnt by Harold in 1054, and the ships in the harbour destroyed at the same time. The castle was built by Robert de Rodelent, but soon after burnt by Gruffydd ab Cynan, Prince of Wales, and Randal, Earl of Chester.

Subsequent to this, Henry II. rebuilt or fortified this Castle, where Giraldus Cambrensis says he was nobly entertained: Queen Eleanor was also delivered of a princess here in 1283. Northumberland seized this castle in 1399, previous to the deposition of Richard II. who dined here, and his retinue, on their way to Flint castle.

At a private dwelling in this village they shew the gable of a house, where it is pretended Edward I. held the parliament that passed the statute of Rhuddlan, about 1284, which is no more than regulations made by the king in council for the future government of Wales, which in the preamble he informs us was then totally subdued. Of this place only one Gothic window remains to distinguish it from a neighbouring barn, while the hall that once contained the parliament of England is now filled with bark, to supply a tan-yard.

There is another old house on the north side of the castle, where they say the king resided, when one Gruffydd Llwyd ab Rhys brought him information of the queen's safe delivery at Caernarvon castle; for which the king immediately knighted him. More to the south are the remains of a priory of black monks, founded before 1268. Below the town, on a large marsh, was fought the famous battle, in 794, between prince Caradoc and the Saxons, under Offa king of Mercia, in which the latter was killed, and a great number of his army slain. On this occasion the fine plaintive Welsh tune, called Morva Rhuddlan, was composed, descriptive of the sanguinary battle on this marsh.

Here is a bridge, consisting of two arches, built or rebuilt in 1595, with an impression of the arms of Hughes, bishop of St. Asaph, on one of the battlements.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

Rhuddlan, anciently Rothelan, is a parish and village on the river Clwyd, in the hundreds of Rhuddlan and Prestatyn, in the county of Flint. The village is miles south from Rhyl and 3 north from St. Asaph, with a station on the London & North-Western railway, in the sub-registration district, union, rural deanery, archdeaconry & diocese of St. Asaph. Rhuddlan was made a free borough by Edward I. and together with Flint and six other places forms a parliamentary district, returning one member. Edward I. in 1284 held a parliament in Rhuddlan, at which on the 12th March the “Statute of Wales” was drawn up, by which Wales was declared part of the royal dominions; the ancient laws to be preserved in civil cases, but the criminal law of England to be introduced and enforced. The manufacture of agricultural implements is extensively carried on by Messrs. Williams & Son, and gives employment to a large number of hands. The church of St. Mary, situated on an eminence above the river, is an edifice of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of two parallel aisles, south porch and an embattled tower at the west end of the north aisle; the east end of the south aisle serves as a chancel, and one of the windows exhibits tracery of Late Decorated character; in the churchyard, which is surrounded with trees, lie several ancient stone slabs and coffin lids bearing incised crosses, and also the lower half of the effigy of a priest. The church affords 500 sittings. The registers date from 1681, but entries from 1748-59 are at the diocesan registry. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £216, net income £212 with 32 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Bishop of St. Asaph, and held since 1884 by the Rev. Thomas Walter Vaughan B. A. of St. David’s College, Lampeter. There are Baptist, Calvinistic, Independent and Wesleyan chapels. Plas Newydd farm, about ½ a mile south-east, is the site of a Dominican priory, founded before 1268; portions of the ancient structure are incorporated in the farm buildings, and in the walls are fixed several sepulchral memorials discovered on the spot, and including a coffin-lid bearing a cross, the stone effigy of a knight and two incised slabs, one of which exhibits the figure of an archbishop, vested and carrying a crosier, and a marginal inscription to William Freney or Fresney, titular archbishop of Rages or Edessa, in Mesopotamia, in the latter part of the 13th century; the other slab has a cross raguly and a sword, and an inscription to Edward . a knight. About ¼ of a mile north-east of the priory there was in the 13th century a hospital or lazar house, and water pipes and other relics have been dug up here. In the village is an ancient house, in the wall of which has been placed an inscription to the effect that the parliament of 1284 was held in it,-a pure fiction. Rhuddlan Marsh (Morfa) extends northwards towards Rhyl along the right bank of the Clwyd. Rhuddlan castle, which stands on high ground, partly embosomed in trees, immediately overlooking the Clwyd, was erected about the middle of the 11th century, and in 1157 was strengthened by Henry II. who made it his headquarters; in 1167 and again in 1213 it was captured by the Welsh; after its recovery in 1277 by Edward I. it was besieged and destroyed in 1282 by Llewelyn and David, but retaken by Edward in the same year; Richard II. rested here when on his way to Flint; in 1642 it was occupied by the Royalists, but surrendered in 1646, and was then dismantled; it is still, however, fairly complete, and forms a massive quadrangular structure with a single drum tower at two of the opposite angles, the other two angles being occupied by gateways, each flanked by two drum towers of equal size; the connecting walls are nearly perfect, but the interior is quite clear of buildings of any kind; the moat, still extant, is lined with masonry. South of the castle is an artificial mound called Twt or Tool hill, said to have been the site of the original castle built in 1015. The parish contains the town of Rhyl.

The area comprises 4,730 acres, of which 15 are water; the population in 1891 was 7,757.
