Historical Description

LECKWITH is a very small village and parish, on the west bank of the river Ely, 1 ½ miles from Canton, 2 west from Cardiff station and 2 from Penarth Dock, in the Southern division of the county of Glamorgan, Dinas Powis hundred, Cardiff petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Llandaff Upper (south-eastern division) and archdeaconry and diocese of Llandaff. The church of St. James is a building of native stone, in a simple English Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch, vestry and a turret containing 2 bells: the east window is stained and there is a carved reredos: the church was restored in 1866, and affords 150 sittings. The register dates from the year 1765. The living is a rectory, united with Cogan to the vicarage of Llandough, tithe rent-charge £107, joint net income £200, with 30 acres of glebe, in the gift of the trustees of the Marquess of Bute, and held since 1882 by the Rev. Frank Ernest Williams M.A. who resides at Penarth. Here is an extensive quarry. Lord Windsor is lord of the manor.

The Marquess of Bute K.T. and Halswell Milbourne Kemeys-Tynte esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is principally clay; subsoil, marl and blue lias. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 1,332 acres; rateable value, £697; the population in 1891 was 122.

The children of this place attend the school at Llandough.
