Historical Description

PYLE is a parish and village on the road from Bridgend to Neath, with a station on the Llynvi and Ogmore section (Porthcawl branch) of the Great Western railway, 196 miles from London, 6 west from Bridgend, 6 south-east from Aberavon and 3 ½ north from Porthcawl, in the Mid division of the county of Glamorgan, Newcastle hundred, Bridgend and Cowbridge union and county court district, Newcastle and Ogmore petty sessional division, rural deanery of Upper Groneath (eastern division), and archdeaconry and diocese of Llandaff. The church of St. James is an ancient building of stone in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch, and an embattled western tower containing one bell: in 1877 the church was restored at a cost of £750, and in 1891 a further restoration, including the chancel, was carried out, at a cost of £450: there are 230 sittings. The register dates from the year 1695. The living is a vicarage, with that of Kenfig annexed, tithe rent-charge £50, average £35, joint net yearly value £131, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Llandaff, and held since 1889 by the Rev. Thomas Melville Jones. There are Calvinistic Methodist and Baptist chapels. The charities amount to £10 yearly. Miss Talbot, of Margam Park, who is lady of the manor, and Evan Howell esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is clay and gravel; subsoil, limestone and mineral. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 1,637; rateable value, £6,046; and the population in 1891 was 893.

A School Board of 5 members was formed is Dec. 1874, for the united district of Pyle, Kenfig & Upper Tythegston, Edward Thomas David, Bridgend, clerk to the board.; Morgan Smith, Pyle, attendance officer.

Board School (mixed & infants), erected in 1876, for 170 children; average attendance, 57 boys & girls & 25 infants.
