Historical Description

ROATH is a parish and pleasant north-eastern suburb of Cardiff. St. Margaret’s (the parish church) was rebuilt in 1871, at a cost of £6,000, on the foundations laid down by Mr. Roos, and is a cruciform building in the Early English style, from designs by the late Mr. Prichard, architect, of Llandaff, consisting of chancel, with organ chamber, nave, transepts, south porch and a central tower containing one bells the piers and arches which carry the tower, the chancel screen, pulpit and walls Of the chancel are all rich with the various hues of alabaster, Bridgend and Forest of Dean stones, while the walls of the nave and transepts are faced with brickwork of various colours effectively arranged: an alabaster screen divides the organ chamber from the chancel: the Marquess of Bute’s private mortuary chapel, formerly a plain plastered building, at the north-east corner, opening into the north side of the chancel and into the north transept, was rebuilt in 1863 with different richly coloured stones and alabaster: the windows are filled with stained glass and the chapel is separated from the church by metal screens: the east window and others are stained: there are 500 sittings. The register dates from the year 1731. The living is a vicarage, tithe rent-charge (vicarial) £100, average £76, net income £193, with glebe (£25), gross yearly value about £240, in the patronage of the Marquess of Bute K.T. and held since 1883 by the Rev. Frederick John Beck M.A. Trinity College, Oxford. St. Germans is an ecclesiastical parish, formed January 1, 1887; the church was built in 1883—4, in the Decorated or Middle Pointed style, from designs by Messrs. Bodley and Gamer, architects, of London, and consists of chancel with aisles, have, aisles, and a turret containing one bell: several of the windows are stained: the pulpit and chancel stalls are admirable specimens of carved oak, and there is a brass lectern: the church affords 1,000 sittings. The register dates from the year 1887. The living is a perpetual curacy, net yearly value £150, with residence, in the gift of Keble College, Oxford, and held since 1887 by the Rev. Robert James Ives. The clergy house, south of the church, was built in 1894, at a cost of £2,200. St. Saviour’s is an ecclesiastical parish formed in 1893 out of St. Germans. The church of St. Saviour, in Splott road, erected in 1888, as a chapel of ease to St. German’s, Roath, is a building of stone in the Early Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel of three bays, nave of five bays, north aisle with chapel, south aisle, and a western turret, containing one bell: there are 800 sittings. The living is a vicarage, gross yearly value £78, in the gift of the Bishop of Llandaff, and held since 1893 by the Rev. James Edward le Strange Dawson M.A. of Corpus Christi college, Oxford. The population is about 11,000. A Mission Room was erected in 1894, at a cost of £1,200: the Bite which is of sufficient extent for a permanent church and parsonage, was given by Lord Tredegar. There is a Welsh Calvinistic Methodist chapel in Clifton street. The (Church of England) Sisters of St. Margaret’s, East Grinstead, have a branch, house in Church terrace, opened in 1882 for the reception of 20 females belonging to the Principality. The Mackintosh Institute, founded in 1890 by Mr. Mackintosh of Mackintosh, who fitted it up and gave it for the use of tenants on his estate, occupies the former buildings of Roath Castle, converted for this purpose, and contains rooms for all kinds of games, reading, writing rooms and a library, there is a gymnasium and skittle alley: the grounds are used for lawn tennis and other out-door games: the members number 400. The Roath cattle and carcase market and slaughter house is in Cycle street. The area is 3,346 acres; rateable value, £180,621; the population in 1881 was 23,096; 1891, 39,657. The population of St. Margaret ecclesiastical parish in 1891 was 20,538; and of St. German, 19,119.
