Historical Description

LLANFAREDD is a parish in the county of Radnor, on the river Wye, 2 ½ miles east from Builth and 2 north from Aberedw station on the Cambrian railway, in the hundred and petty sessional division of Colwyn, Builth union and county court district, and in the rural deanery of Elwel, archdeaconry of Brecon and diocese of St. David’s. The church of St. Mary is a plain building of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, porch and a turret containing one bell; it was restored in 1891, at a cost of £400, and affords 60 sittings; The registers of baptisms and burials date from the year 1698, and marriages from 1704. The living is a rectory, annexed to that of Aberedw, tithe rent-charge £395, average £296, joint net income £257, with one acre of glebe, in the gift of the Bishop of St. David’s, and held since 1887 by the Rev. Arthur George Adamson B.A. of Worcester College, Oxford, who resides at Aberedw. There is a Welsih Methodist chapel, Sir Joseph Russell Bailey bart. is lord of the manor. Edward D. Thomas esq. and Evan Thomas esq. are the principal landowners. The land is principally pasture. The area is 2,231 acres of land and 120 of water; rateable value, £1,102; the population in 1891 was 149.

The children of this parish attend the Board school at Llanelwedd.
