BONALLY, Bonallo Bonella, Bonello: From Bonaly near Colinton in Midlothian. There was also a place Banaley in Fife, now obsolete (Liddall, Place-names of Fife and Kinross, p. 23) which might account for the Fife references. Thomas de Bounayelin was one of the jurors on an inquest held in the Chapel of St. Katherine, Bavelay, in 1280 (Bain, IV, 1762). William Bonaylay and his spouse had a charter of part of the lands of Beyth Bonaylay c. 1570 (RD., p. 470), Robert Bonalay is recorded in Balcormo, parish of Largo, in 1637 (St. Andrews), John Bonallie in Weyms, 1641 (PBK, p. 206), James Bonalley, wheelwright in Edinburgh, is mentioned in 1668 (Edinb. Marr.). David Bonallo (1818—1889) was minister of Arndoch in 1844 and of Blackford in 1858 (Scott, Fasti, 11 p. 784—785). The last two forms are current in Fife.
