The Portuguese surname Bragança probably comes from the Celtic, which denominated a region in the Iberian Peninsula as Brigantia, which means "land of warrior people".When the Romans ruled the region, Brigantia had great importance, so it was renamed by the Romans as Juliobriga, as a tribute to the Roman emperor Julius Caesar.With the wars between Christians and Muslims, the local villages were almost all destroyed, but rebuilt in the twelfth century, and was put the name of Bragança, which became the center of the County of Bragança and an important city, at the fifteenth century.The surname appeared as a reference to a family origin, which was the city of Bragança.The Bragança noble descendant of Afonso I of Bragança, the first Duke of Bragança and King's illegitimate son John I, who granted the duchy to Afonso I, in the early fifteenth century.There was one time that the kingdoms of Portugal and Spain were united, they had only one king, it created a revolt environment in the Kingdom Portuguese, was when the aristocracy and the Portuguese bourgeoisie chose the Duke of Bragança, D. João II to be the new Portuguese king, who came to be called D. João IV of Portugal, who after winning the Spanish oppression restored Portuguese independence.The House of Bragança became the Fourth Dynasty of Portugal, which has lasted since the restoration of independence in 1640 until the establishment of the republic in Portugal in 1910.From the Bragança dynasty descended from the emperors of Brazil, who ruled the country from 1822 to 1889.
