This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Charlwood,' a parish in Surrey, seven miles from Reigate. John Charlewood, Charlwood, or Cherlwod, the stationer and printer, seems undoubtedly to have sprung from Surrey. 'Charlewood apparently came from Surrey, as on Jan. 12, 1591, we find him taking as an apprentice "Gefthe French Charlwood, son of Richard Charlwood, of Lye (Leigh'), in the county of Surrey." Charlewood is a Surrey parish, and is not an uncommon county surname': Dictionary of National Biography.
