The Chuene surname is derived from the word tswene, which means 'monkey' in the native language of Sepedi. It came about because the first ancestors were living on a mountain range dominated by monkeys, therefore human inhabitants of this mountain range had to learn how to make monkey noises as an attempt to fool the monkeys. They grew so accustomed to living around monkeys and learning about these animals that it became their totem. Later on as the first colonizers asked such individuals to identify themselves they did so by their totem name.
