This surname is derived from the Zulu or Xhosa word, 'foloko'. The same word is present in many languages in the region, and is probably a corruption of the English word, fork. The book, Jando: The Rite of Circumcision and Initiation in East African Islam, records:
- Forebears.ioHis name was Foloko, which is the same word as 'fork', given to him as a nick-name because he used forks when eating and not his hands, as is the usual custom among Africans. However, according to other sources, Foloko was not at all related to the Swahili in Chiwala.
