The Kanyongolo surname comes from the Tonga tribe, which is located in the Zambia (known as Chilenje), they also are found in the Tonga community of Chikwawa Chapananga Village of Malawi.

The Tonga tribe in Mozambique, closely related to the Lenge speaking community located at Nyembe tribe. They are also known in the Nyembe tribe as Lenge speaking.

According to the Nyembe, kanyongolo means a 'hunting rifle that uses powder', they are hunters. Similarly, the Malawian refers to the rifle as mulenje, synonymous with the name chilenje (in Malawi Chikwawa and Zambia Chilenje).
