MACKEURTAN, Macgurtain: Gaelic MacArtain, 'son of Artan,' a diminutive of Art, an ancient Irish personal name, Donald Mak-curtane who witnessed a charter by Francis Bothwell, dated at Kirkwall and Halyrude-hous in 1572 (RMS., III, 2389), apperrs two years later as servitor to M. Francis Rothwell, treasurer (REO., p. 350). A family of the name were for generations gardeners in the Isle of Menteith to the Grahams, earls of Menteith (Hutchison, The Lake of Menteith).
