The largest amount of Martinaglia family are to be found in Switzerland, where 18 families have so far being recorded. This occurred when in 1582 Martinaglia families left northern Italy and crossed over into Switzerland; settling in the town of Cadro, north of Lugano. Others who remained behind settled at Valsolda, Lake Como and later one family moved to Milan. Another Martinaglia family from Switzerland have settled in France at Thonen-les-Baines and Ambilly, which is near the Swiss border. Others left Switzerland and settled in Argentina. The South African family Martinaglia, began with the arrival of Guglielmo Martinaglia in 1879. He was from Issiglio, near Ivrea in the Canavese region of Piedmont. In 1896 he discovered and opened the now ''World Heritage Site'' of mankind which is still active with research, namely the Sterkfontein Caves.
