Masalesa Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

Masalesa means 'dawn comes and disappears'. It is actually a sentence, masa asa a lesa. Dawn is not there for good but vanishes. This started centuries ago. Initially these people bore the Maphoto surname. A Maphoto woman gave birth to twins. It was seen as an omen (sehlola) to give birth to twins: one twin had to be sacrificed (killed). Fortunately the chief at the time was mourning the death of his mother. It was taboo to kill when nation was mourning. it could only be done after several years.

The mother of the twin to be executed took the baby to another chief far away. The one to be killed was the one born first. After many years the chief recalled the missing twin and sent his men to look among all the chiefs. Ultimately they found him and narrated the story to the hosting chief. The latter said that he guaranteed that he will never be killed.

The chief called the twin and introduced him to visitors. The chief said "Greet this men they are looking for you". The men said "Hello , how are you?" (Thobela, go jwang monna wa ga Mapoto?). He said "'Masa asa a lesa." They took him and when talking to him always said "Masa asa a lesa." and it became his name. When it has to be written it was brought together and shortened as Masalesa.

So many of the Maphotos started to identify themselves with him and of course all his descendants. To distinguish himself from his twin brother he also used that name and hence you hear "Masalesa a lephoto."

Masalesa and Maphoto is one and the same family. His life was spared.
