Ndowe Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

In Zimbabwe ndowe is a Shona word which means 'dung'. The Ndowe people in Zimbabwe belong to the totem Mhofu yemukono (eland), Shava of the Vhuramavi clan. This clan then divided and started to migrate around Zimbabwe where one of the ancestors migrated to Seke communal lands near Harare. They were called Seke mutema of the Vhuramavi clan. During their stay in Seke area due to family conflicts, one family migrated further north to Uzumba area and settled there. The area had rich soil, Some areas where swampy where people would dig and create shallow water reservoirs which they used for watering crops whilst practicing market gardening in summer when water is scarce. They grew vegetables in summer. During rainy seasons they grew maize. For their crops to grow well they used cow dung as manure which they would spread in the garden fields. The crops grew splendidly well with cow dung manure added to the rich soil of Uzumba area. It is from this practice of using cow dung as manure for crops where the name Ndowe was derived from. Most of the Ndowe people are found in Mashonaland East Province of Zimbabwe in the district of Uzumba, under chief Nyajina, in Chigayo village where they are settled up to this date.
