Their original surname is Matidza. The progenitor moved to Kimberly in the early 19th century as a mining labourer.
Other miners observed how Mr Matidza walked and executed work. They decided to call him Phampha. The name has sometimes been changed to Phamphe.
When Mr Matidza returned home, he introduced himself as Mr Phampha and that was when the surname changed.
