User-submitted Reference
Sebobane
noun, proper name, Sotho origin
Definition:
Sebobane refers to a person who loafs, idles, or lingers, one who remains in a place without urgency or fixed purpose.
Etymology:
The name derives from the Sotho root boba, meaning to loiter, idle, linger, potter, wait, skulk, loaf, lounge, or laze. The related word seboba denotes a horsefly in Sotho, an insect known for persistent hovering and lingering movement, which reinforces the semantic character of the root.
Historical and genealogical note:
Sebobane is also the name of Sebobane, the first Morena of the Makgolokwe-a-Mafehleng, a lineage that separated from the main Makholokoe group in the 1820s. Sebobane, born circa 1815, was the son of Kgosi Selotolotsa, grandson of Morena Polane, and great-grandson of Morena Tsholedi. Kgosi Selotolotsa and Morena Polane were killed during the conflict between the Makholokoe and Mahlapho around 1820, at a time when the Makholokoe resided at Thaba Kholokoe.
Morena Sebobane's sons were Kgabele and Mothibedi by his first wife, and Morake by his second wife, Kgosatsana Nkaledi, daughter of Morena Nkokoto of the Bahlakoana branch settled at Thabatshotsho, Ha Nkokoto. Although their union was not formalised according to custom, it produced Morake. The arrival of Voortrekkers at Ha Nkokoto from 1836 disrupted this union, after which Morake adopted his mother's clan name and the Kwena totem.
Morake's children were Mabusa Boesak, also known as Busakwena, who died in 1947 and was buried in the district of Reitz, Moorosi Johannes, who died in 1946 and was buried in Alexandra Township, and Bulu Petrus, who died in 1956 and was also buried in Alexandra Township.
Usage:
The term functions both as a descriptive word rooted in Sotho language and as a hereditary surname tracing descent from Morena Sebobane and the Makgolokwe-a-Mafehleng lineage.
