In about 1550-52 Peter Slootmans was born in Wilrijk (Antwerp Province, Belgium). His father is said to have been Claes Van De Slote. Apparently during the registration of Peter's birth or some later registration, the priest of the local parish misunderstood the child's surname and registered it as Slootmans. All of Peter's descendants were given the surname Slootmans. This leads to the curious situation where, in all probability, everyone with this surname today are related.

According to thelate Professor Robert Van Passen (1923-2002) the family could be descendants of 'Berewilpo Ex Sclauti) who is said to have sold land he owned near Ghent to Saint Amandus who founded an abbey on this land (later called Saint-Baafs Abbay). Prof. Van Passen traced the descendants of this Berewilpo till the early 15th century near Boekhoute (Prov. East-Flanders, Belgum). There he lost track of the family who was, by then called Van De Slote.
