Most carriers of the surname live in the Sallands region of Overijssel in the Netherlands. The name and its variants is particularly common in Zwolle, Dalfsen and Raalte. In 1811 Napoeleon forced all residents of the Netherlands to take a fixed surname. Most people in Sallands had no surname, so had to choose one. Many who lived near the river chose to take the name van der Vegt. In Germany and Twents (east of Sallands), people either already had surnames or used the name of their farm as a surname, so the name is not as common there.
