Historical Description

The most Western Countrey of the Continent of Europe, is Spain, environed on all sides with the Sea, except toward France, from which it is separated by the natural strength of the Pyrenean Mountains, and the artificial Fortresses of Pampelune on the North-West, and Perpigna on the South-East.

Situation

The whole circuit of this Country is 1893 English miles. It is situate in the more Southerly part of the Northern temperate Zone, and almost in the midst of the four and six Climates; the longest day being fifteen hours in length.

Natures, and Manners of the People

They are a people much given to Women; impudent braggers; extreme proud, and in their gate very stately and majestical. But otherwise they are people very grave in their carriages, and in offices of piety very devout; to their King very obedient; and of their civil duties to their betters, not unmindfull; of an unmoved patience in suffering adversities, accompanied with a setled resolution to overcome them.

The Women are sober, loving their Husbands or Friends; wonderfull delicate; curious in painting, or perfuming.

Fertility

This Countrey is enriched with Sacks, Sugars, Oyl, Metals, Liquoras, Rice, Silk, Lamb-skins, Wool, Cork, Rosin, Steel, Oranges, Raisons, and fruit of the like nature, which owe most of their being to heat; but in Corn it is very defective, and receiveth from Italy, France, and Sicily.

Diet

The Cattel hereof are neither fair, nor many; so that their fare for the most part is on Sallets, and Fruits of the earth; every Gentleman being limited what flesh he shall buy for himself and his family.

Division

This Kingdome is divided into twelve Provinces, which were anciently Kingdomes, (viz.) 1. Leon, and Oniedo. 2. Navarr. 3. Corduba. 4. Gallicia 5. Biscay. 6. Tolledo. 7. Murcia. 8. Castile. 9. Portugal. 10. Valentia. 11. Catelogue; and 12. Aragon.

A Geographical Description of the World (1671) by George Meriton

The kingdom of Spain is composed of 49 provinces, which, including the Canary and Balearic Islands, cover an area of 196,173 square miles. The total population, inclusive of the Canary and Balearic Isles, was 20,356,000 (1914), Madrid, the capital, having 625,796 inhabitants, Barcelona 621,921, Valencia 244,594, Seville 164,244. Spain is generally fertile, and besides the culture of the vine and the olive, fruit growing is one of the staple industries. Cereals of all kinds, hemp and flax, are also largely cultivated. The famous wines of Jeres, Alicante, and Malaga are exported in vast quantities to this country. In minerals Spain is very rich, copper, lead and iron, and quicksilver being the chief products, which, with wine and fruits, cork and Esparto grass, and olive oil form the staple exports to England. The Imports from the United Kingdom to Spain amounted in 1920 to £22,674,223. Exports to U.K., £37,296,827. Prior to the war Germany was making great efforts to secure a share of the trade previously enjoyed almost exclusively by France and Great Britain.
