Historical Description

Fourteen provinces and ten territories are comprised in the Republic, which has one of the richest agricultural and pastoral territories in South America, and is about 1,132,000 square miles in area. Its population in 1919 was 8,462,030. The principal products are wool, hides, sugar, cereals, and tobacco, also a large quantity of fruits for export. There are immense cattle and sheep ranches and the export of frozen beef and mutton is an important industry. Britain has a large trade with the Argentine, and the railways are almost entirely in the hands of British companies. The imports from Britain include machinery, hardware, cotton and linen goods, and woollens. In 1920 the Imports from the United Kingdom amounted to £43,841,651 ; Exports to United Kingdom, 1920: £128,046,279. In 1913 the value of German goods imported into Argentina amounted to nearly £14,000,000 and consisted chiefly of electrical machinery, paper printing machinery, chemicals, cheap jewellery, photo graphic accessories, soap, etc. The principal ports a Buenos Aires, Rosario, La Plata and Bahia Blane. The population of Buenos Aires, the capital, was (1920) 1,658,269.
